3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for the money
While I'd agree that the range of these units in typical conditions isn't 6miles, I tested it upto about 1 mile with a lot of stuff in the way (opposite sides of a hill).

I'm not sure what the first post is taking about when it says "high power mode" - I assume that means the GMRS channels as opposed to the FRS ones, as this unit doesn't have a power boost...

5.0 out of 5 stars It works in an ideal condition., September 29, 2004
This review is from: Uniden GMR635-2CK 6-Mile 22-Channel GMRS/FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
My house and school are located in each hill-side of a lake. So, I should go down and then up to go to school. I tried two different situations.

(1) The road is covered by trees: It works just around 1 mile range. After that, I lost signal.

(2) Between my home and school: Both of us went to outside and I stand where I am able to look at the school. My friend was on
the roof on fifth-story building. It worked about 5.5 miles range. We measured a direct distance on the map.

Uniden claim 6 miles and it doesn't seem to be a lie. But, 6 miles can only happen in the extremely-friendly condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Radio for the Price, January 24, 2005

People who talk about having only 1 mile of range on their talkie don't really understand the way Radio Waves work. All GMRS and FRS radios are on the 462mhz band, what that means to the avg user is that it's pretty much line of site. If you can see the person you will be able to talk to them. Now you will be able to have about a mile or so of trees things like that in between you and the other person. If you have hills and valleys between you and the person you are trying to talk too, you will have problems hearing them if the hill or mountain is between you and them. At this frequency radio waves don't bend much at all, that's why it's going to be line of sight. Power will help somewhat a 1watt talkie won't have the range that a 3watt one has, but it's not going to be very much in terms of distance.

People who say this talkie or that talkie works better just by range aren't explaining what their test conditions are, so you have no idea what is between them and the other person. If you wanted to compare radios like this....you have to have other radios in the test also, you can't tell anything from just one set / brand of radios in this kind of test.

Simple rule for gmrs/frs radios, if you can see the general area the other person is you should be able to talk to them. If one of you is elevated your range will increase dramatically. That's why they put tv/radio towers on hills and mountains. One mile is typical range for almost all gmrs radios that are transmitting 500mw to 1watt. This same one watt would be just as good if you were 10 miles apart and able to see the area where the other person is.

It's not the wattage that is important, for gmrs radios, it's the feature set on each radio that should be the main draw to a particular radio, not just someone saying I can talk only 1 mile with this radio. Want to learn about radio waves and radios, this site will keep you busy for eons. www.qrz.com

5.0 out of 5 stars For my purposes, these are GREAT!, January 31, 2005
This review is from: Uniden GMR635-2CK 6-Mile 22-Channel GMRS/FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
After extensive testing, the library where I work switched to these radios based on the price and features. We use about 20 of these to keep people in touch as they move all around a VERY large, two story building in a downtown urban environment. Because they are rechargable, we save a ton of money on batteries (our old radios went through a set every 2 weeks). As for clarity - we have a very strong signal no matter where we are in the library building or on the grounds (an entire city block). The concrete of the building doesn't even keep us from communicating via these radios.

Though I cannot comment on the claim that they will reach six miles (because we don't use them like that), I can say that we enjoy very clear voice conversations with no significant "interference" from outside radios. For our purposes these radios have been perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars Field tested - Excellent!, February 16, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Uniden GMR635-2CK 6-Mile 22-Channel GMRS/FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
In the past, I used another brand (begins with an M: T5420's) for skiing and fishing. While those models worked well, they only got about 8 hours on 3 AAA batteries (each unit). Over a weekend trip, this caused a problem.

The Unident's I now have are truly leaps ahead of other models I've used. The rechargeable battery option is perfect and I found the range to be more than adequate. (My family used 4 units over an entire ski resort and had no problems at all with reception: moutain terrain, etc and they worked great).

I highly recommend these units and can speak from experience from using other manufacturers models.

Hope this helped...

I'm not sure what the first post is taking about when it says "high power mode" - I assume that means the GMRS channels as opposed to the FRS ones, as this unit doesn't have a power boost function that I have seen.

As I haven't had one of these radio's before, I don't know how it compares to others, but I think that it's common knowledge that the advertised ranges on all of these radios (not just Uniden ones) are the absolute maximum ranges in completely flat surroundings with line of sight (i.e. no buildings in the way).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Walkie Talkies, December 28, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Uniden GMR635-2CK 6-Mile 22-Channel GMRS/FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
These walkie talkies are really nice. They definantly wont go 6 miles with anything in the way but they go about 3 miles with plenty of houses and trees around.

Some people cant get much distance with these. There are certain channels that go 6 miles and other channels that go only about 1-2. Also, you need a liscence to use some of the channels.

There are a lot of cool features. There is the channel scan which scans for other signals. This is cool because you can see if anyone else has a walkie talkie. I use this for airsofting(kind of like paintballing) and we have radio-men. I can use this feature for finding the enemy channel and listening to them.

One bad thing about this walkie talkie is the volume. You can change the volume of the sound but even at 1 volume it is very loud. Another bad thing is that you cant change the cover. Unlike some of the Cobra brand walkie talkies, you cant change the color of it.

This is a great walkie talkie but you shouldnt expect it to really go 6 miles with even a toothpick in the way. Many of the people reviewing this are freaking out that it only goes 1 mile.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Uniden GMR635-2CK 6-Mile 22-Channel GMRS/FRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
I got these radios for about $40. there not bad. I havent been able to really try them. I think they could go sicks miles in an open space. They are very simple(but yet add some very cool features like call rings and scan) and provide some fun as well. For spring break im going to Florida so my family is going to take them there!

Great for:

Bikes
All family occasions
Parks
Six Flags( those places)
Big Buildings

Not good for:

Going to Safeway and asking your wife what she wants.
Getting directions from others(one house to a car)
