Browsing for channels is straightforward and intuitive thanks to the scan feature, which looks for active channels while you view the display, and the monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given channel. To transmit on a GMRS or FRS channel, merely press the PTT button while the scan is paused. It's important to note that the transmission range will vary depending on the channel and the surrounding terrain. Should the signal prove too weak for a given situation, however, you can extend it via the Power Boost button.
Additional features include a backlit LCD display with a battery strength meter, a keypad lock that keeps you from accidentally pressing buttons at the wrong time (such as when a radio is in your pocket), a roger beep, and your choice of five different call tones. The radios run on four AAA batteries each, but can also be teamed with rechargeable NiMH batteries and a charger for more efficient use (NiMH batteries and charger are sold separately). The radio bundle is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
What's in the Box

5 Miles Easy! Without Boost,
By A Customer
This review is from: Uniden GMR855-2 8-Mile 22-Channel GMRS/FRS Two-Way Radios (Pair) (Electronics)
I took these radios out this Memorial Day weekend. Went out to the Mojave Desert and used them while we road our quads. We used these radios and were able to hear perfectly clear and we were about 6 miles away from the campsite without using the boost. These radios were very handy. I know that if im out riding and something happens I would be able to get a hold of someone. I recommend these radios for anyone who plans using them in open terrains, where there is not allot interference. Runs on four AAA batteries.

They are rugged and work fine. Very good battery life. I have talked to people over 25 miles away that were on a mountain hiking. It all depends on the terrain. At times they will only carry 1/4 mile. Carry a cell phone also just in case!!! Can you hear me now.........MAYBE???
