Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Stay connected with your buddies while hiking on the trail, riding the ski lift, or exploring other locations within a 5-mile range with this pair of GMRS380 two-way radios. Also ideal as a neighborhood watch tool and workplace aid, each radio features 15 channels (8 GMRS and 7 FRS) and 38 CTCSS privacy codes, along with a voice-activated transmitter that enables hands-free communication when teamed with an optional headset and mic. The range of channels and privacy codes gives you several communication options, ensuring that you can almost always talk with friends or family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal (radios must be set on the same channel and code to communicate).

It's easy to browse for channels thanks to the channel scan feature, which looks for active signals while you view the display, and the monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given channel. And talking on the radio couldn't be simpler--just hit the PTT button when you're ready to transmit. It's important to note that the transmission range will vary depending on the channel and the surrounding terrain.

The radios also include such features as a backlit LCD display with a battery strength meter, a keypad lock that keeps you from accidentally pressing buttons at the wrong time (such as when a radio is in your pocket), a headset jack, and your choice of five different call tones. And no worries about running out of power too quickly, as the radios run for around 25 hours each on four AAA batteries, and are also recharge-capable when teamed with optional NiMH battery packs and charging cradles (sold separately). The entire bundle, which includes two belt clips for efficient transport, is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

What's in the Box
Two GMRS380 radios, two belt clips, user's manual.

3.0 out of 5 stars Prices are going way down on Uniden's GMRS 380 2-way radios!, May 6, 2003

This review is from: Uniden GMRS380 5-Mile 15-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
After purchasing a pair of 380's for my wife and I, we are pleased that we only had to pay 25.00 USD for these units. Best Buy was blowin them out as a clearance sale. The range is only as good as line of sight, that is to say if you were on top of a tall building and could see the person to whom you were transmitting to, you might get the advertised range of up to five miles "as the crows flys". R.F. power out is rated at 2 watts! On the other hand, most people use these units for short distance communications, and can be satisfied with maybe a mile with objects in the way of the r.f. that is being emitted. All IN ALL THEY WERE WORTH 25.00 FOR THE PAIR, GIVEN THE OLD ADDAGE,"YOU GET WHAT YOU PAID FOR".

4.0 out of 5 stars Uniden GMRS-380, December 29, 2002

Very nice size. Uses AAA batteries (small) so batteries won't last as long as AA. The volume/on-off control rotates the wrong way. Doesn't have the volume of the Motorola FRS/GMRS radios so hard to hear in noisy places. Very positive tactile feel on transmit button so good with gloves. Battery charge contacts on outside of case so can be used with drop-in charger. Controls very intuitive and logical. Does not have compass or stopwatch so no confusing menus. Display has large digits but no backlight. Nice small size.

2.0 out of 5 stars GMRS 380-2 by Uniden, March 17, 2003
This review is from: Uniden GMRS380 5-Mile 15-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Electronics)
I purchased this product because it was the best deal for what was advertised on the package. I returned this product for not coming close to matching what was advertised on its package. "Up to a 5 mile range" was what was promised, however, transmissions were unintelligible after 3/4 of a mile and stopped completely after only 1 mile. I could also hardly make sense out of what was being said to me over the radio during transmissions. This model performed worse than other types that I had tried that only had a 2-mile range. When I spend [that kind of money] on a set of radios, I don't want my childs walkie talkie to produce sound that is more clear than mine. I had planned to keep them and just use them at the fair, mall, beach,etc... but crowds of people REALLY slaughtered the range on these puppies. I returned them to the store and received another identical set only to get the same flawed performance. In all fairness they weren't a total hunk of trash, but save your money and go for a better model or manufacturer all together.
