I've owned several Uniden radios over the years. They are always well built, reliable and work. This radio is no exception. It is clear on broadcast and receive at all 3 wattage settings. Even in congested radio traffic areas, the battery will 8 hours daily over 2-3 days on a charge (mostly receive). In noisy, windy, etc environments you want to keep it around your chest. My minor nitpicks is that when the radio is turned of it doesn't retain the last settings for scan mode, etc, but it just takes a few seconds to set it up. Get an AC - 12v adapter ($5-$10) so that you can charge it off a wall.

I bought this unit before a 1 week long kayak expedition off the north of Vancouver Island. I charged the unit up before I left Port Hardy and used it to check weather reports and talk to the local light house keeper. The reception was great and the battery was still almost unused by the end of the week. I left it on a home and the battery was still good 2 weeks later. A car charger would be a nice addition but I already have a DC-AC converter in my cigarette lighter so I didn't miss that option. For the money, this is a good unit although I didn't try submerging it in salt water.

This radio works very well. I was able to transmit over a good distance, is clear and understandable. The weather radio section has a weather alarm which is quite loud and worked well during the last tornado watch. The speaker is usually fine but not loud enough to be heard well when there s a lot of engine noise. It only has a 12 v DC charger, but I purchased an AC adapter. I now prefer charging the unit in the car while driving to the boat.

This radio was bought on Amazon in July 2011. Excellent power over 15 miles of Lake Superior. (to boat with high antenna). This is outstanding for a hand held set! First problem was a month after receiving the set. The 12 V charger attachment broke off one side where it clips on the radio. In Jan 2012 the battery clip that holds the battery in place fell off and could not be re clipped (broke). The plastic attachments are very stiff and broke off without undue pressure. Shame, as other wise good UNIDEN radio.

for a tiny antenna, it has a good reach. Batteries hold up very good. After about 5 miles you need to stand tall for better TX. Reception is great. Book instructions were OK.

I surf kayak. sometimes when I am a mile or more from where I put in, and also several hundred feet offshore, I like to know that I can reach someone if necessary. That's why I bought this. I wore it out the other day and I ended up in the water a few times with this clipped to my vest and it came out fine. I can hear all the local traffic. I can get weather updates (I may want to start home before I can see the storm coming). Great little radio.

Overall this handheld fits my needs pretty well. Plenty of features like scan, scan emergy channels, weather, weather alert, etc. My radio holds a charge which last a couple of days of constant use. Recharge is easy. I purchased an ac adapter so I could charge at home.

We have two of these radios, one dedicated to a 15' runabout and one for our sunfish. They receive and scan extremely well, and in a wet to soaking environment have functioned flawlessly. For the price we couldn't have asked for more!
