I had been searching for a 2.4GHZ phone, with integrated answering machine, for the last month and have researched all of them. 4.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Phone, August 13, 2002

I had been searching for a 2.4GHZ phone, with integrated answering machine, for the last month and have researched all of them. I've owned Sony's, Panasonic's, V-Tech's, AT&T's, etc, and I was never too pleased with the sound quality of these products. After reading some comparisons, and checking with Consumer Reports, I decided to purchase the Uniden TRU-448-2. The sound quality is great. The set-up process is simple, and the owners manual is very in-depth. I would have given this phone 5 stars, but it's limited expandibility held me back. Overall this is a great phone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best phone I ever purchased!, February 16, 2003

This review is from: Uniden TRU-448-2 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Caller ID and Digital Answering System (Office Product)
This phone has got to be the best phone I have ever owned. I have always had Uniden phones and trust there quality. I purchased this phone because I needed an answering machine. The extra phone was just an added bonus. I always research every thing I buy and this phone was one of the top on my list. The phone is easy to use and the answering machine a piece of cake. I just have to say to mp3ed READ YOUR MANUAL !! You can have it automatically answer when you take it off the base. You can also set it to answer the phone by hitting practically any button on the phone. The end button is small but not a con on my part. Because of the separate button the talk button can also be used as the flash button. No more fumbling to find the flash button and hopefully catch that call waiting. I just have to say to the last person "you must have gotten a defective phone". I also should say that Amazon says that the phone is not wall mountable but it is. This was one of the main reasons I purchased this phone. How can you beat the price for 2-2.4GHz Digital phones and a Digital answering machine w/caller ID. I would recommend this phone to all of my friends and family.

this seems like a nice phone, with an amazing feature set. that's what it says right here on the box. but nobody seems upset about how incredibly difficult this phone is to use. there's no single glaring flaw, just a big pile of inconveniences that add up to a beastly little phone. i really, really wanted to like this phone, but i've returned it after a few days.

complaints, in no particular order:

the base, handset1, and handset2 share no information with each other except the incoming caller-id. effect: if you want to turn off your ringer, you've got to visit 3 separate devices. if you've built up a nice phonebook in one of the handsets, you'll have to re-enter the names/numbers in the other handset if you want it there.

the caller-id does not consult your phonebook to look up the name you've set for an incoming number (like your cell phone does for you).

the caller-id display on the handsets is so tiny, you'll be forced to actually pick up the phone to read it. the base has a nice big red led display, but it's wasted telling you how many calls are stored on the answering machine, not who's calling.

the user-interface (handset and base buttons) is tedious and confusing. different buttons mean different things at different times. different buttons mean the same things at different times. for some operations, the order in which you press certain buttons matters, and there's no easy way to guess which sequence does what you want. keep the manual near the phone if you plan to do anything besides place and answer calls. oh, and fold down the useful pages because the index is almost useless.

i gave it two stars here to be consistent with other reviews (i'm sure there are worse phones), but for me it's really a big fat 0.

Reception is fine and the double handsets is the major reason I purchased this set for my parents. However, the speed dial and call end buttons are difficult to use and the backlit display is hard to read for those without exceptional eye-sight.

Annoyances:
- Most cordless phones have one button for both TALK and END. However, this Uniden model has *two* and the END button is about 1/6th the size of the TALK button.

- Display hard to read for those with less than stellar vision.

- Speed dial is not as simple as hitting a dial button then the number. It's some convoluted set of directions before you can get it to dial.

- While the phone is ringing on the base set, if you pick it up, it will not automatically answer. You must also hit the talk button.

- Interference with my wireless PC network (all 2.4GHz do though)

Positives:
- Decent reception
- Dual handsets
- NiMH battery

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't use both handsets at once!, December 25, 2003

Great sound quality. Good Range. Good answering machine. No problems except for 2 big ones. This, as other 2.4g phones will interfere with wireless networking. If you keep changing the channel on the phone though you can get them to not interefere. But the BIG one is that you can't use both of the handsets at the same time. only one at a time. FYI - I think that greatly reduces the usability of the phones. Otherwise it's good.

This is the best phone for the money, and I'd shopped around for awhile. My previuos phones were not good at all. The volumes was too low even when you adjusted it. This phone had no problem with the volume, it goes nice and high if you want. i also like the distintive rings that it has . You can program it so if a certain person calls, you can have a certain song or ring. The ONLY thing that is bad is that two people cant talk at the same time on both of these phones, so you would have to switch back and forth, but otherwise it has everything even back light, so when the phone rings at night you can see who is calling.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleased with this phone, February 19, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Uniden TRU-448-2 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Caller ID and Digital Answering System (Office Product)
I did a lot of research on multiple handset phones and all seemed to have a lot of pluses but a few drawbacks. We have only had this system for a week, but so far we're very happy. There are some drawbacks:
One caller has mentioned that I sound "tinny." (She thought I was on a cell phone.) You can't use both handsets at the same time (but I think you can use one handset and the base speakerphone at the same time. Haven't tried it.) The "end" button is unusually small, but this hasn't really caused a problem. The outgoing message on the answering machine has poor-quality sound. I wish this phone had the intercom feature I saw on some other brands. You have to program both handsets separately.
On the plus side, the quality of the phones seems good. I used the manual and found the setup easy. I like the two-handset system; great for transferring many calls to a teenager up in his room! If someone is on the extension, you get a beep rather than breaking into a private call. You have the option of transferring stored caller id numbers into the phone book. Best of all, this 2.4 gig system does not interfere with my wireless network. I'm not sure why not, but I'm not complaining.
Overall, I think we made a good decision. From the research I did, I don't believe it's possible to find the perfect phone system. But for the price, we're pleased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Value, Clear Calls, December 24, 2002
This review is from: Uniden TRU-448-2 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Caller ID and Digital Answering System (Office Product)
I am very happy with this phone. The calls are clear and the answering machine is easy to use. Also, I have found that the user interface is intuitive and I haven't even had to look at the manual.
The one draw back of this and other dual handset cordless phone systems is that only one person can use the phone at a time.
For the price, this is loaded with features without sacrificing quality.

2.0 out of 5 stars Taking it back, March 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Uniden TRU-448-2 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Caller ID and Digital Answering System (Office Product)
To me reception is all important. That is why I am taking this one back today. I really liked all the features, but I get an echo when I talk. The person on the other end says it sounds like I'm in a tunnel. I found that the further I got away from the base unit, the less 'tunnel effect' there was. If you can have the base unit (with answering machine) several rooms away or you talk outside alot, it's great.

This review is from: Uniden TRU-448-2 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone with Caller ID and Digital Answering System (Office Product)
Just got this phone a few weeks ago and it is a great phone. The 2 handsets are great, especially since the second one doesn't even have to be plugged into a phone jack! The caller id and all of the other functions are great. I would definitely recommend this phone!
