5.0 out of 5 stars Stop here!
If anyone is looking for a phone, look no further. This is the best phone I ever had! {and I've had many] The clarity can't be beat. I highly recommend this. You won't be disappointed.

The Uniden TRU246 is the latest in their series of 2.4GHz phones. It offers true 2.4GHz DSS transmission from both base and handset, which gives great security and range. I was able to walk halfway down my block with no interruption in signal. The lighted keypad, sleek design and silver finish give it a cool look. Unfortunately, there is significant background noise with this model. With my EXA950, a 900 MHz model, the sound is impeccable, there is absolutely no background noise. I called Uniden and they said a certain amount of noise is "normal", varies by model and is greater in the 2.4 GHz models. I find the noise unnacceptable, I am very dissapointed because the other features of this phone are so nice. You may want to stick with a 900 MHz model until they get this bug out.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is a Great Phone!, July 18, 2001

I have owned and used a Uniden TRU246 2.4 GHz DSS Cordless Phone for about seven months now, and I truly love it! The sound is so clear and static-free, you forget you're talking on a cordless phone. It also has an incredibly long range. I carry the phone all around outside my house, and the sound quality is just as good as if you were talking on a corded phone. It even has a clear sound from all the way across the street. I love the built-in Caller ID, which is also compatible with Call Waiting Caller ID. The display also shows other things, such as a list of the numbers and/or names you have programmed into memory, and options such as whether to turn Call Waiting Caller ID or Auto Answer on or off. These features on the display make using the phone virtually mistake-proof. Another plus to the phone is that it stands up. This is a very convenient phone for carrying outside or all over the house with you, because it has an unbelievably far range, and because it has Caller ID display in the handset, so you know who is calling and can answer the phone no matter where you are. If anyone were shopping for a cordless phone, this Uniden TRU246 would be my first recommendation.

1.0 out of 5 stars There are better options, July 17, 2001
This review is from: Uniden TRU246 2.4 GHz Digital Spread Spectrum Cordless Phone (Office Product)
I bought this phone to substitute a 900 mhz phone and after two days I am returning it to the store. First, the ringer has no off switch. You can control the volume, but some of us like to completely turn it off so we won't be disturbed at night. Second, I get a lot of static when I use my microwave, making imposible to continue a conversation. Third, it has no mute or hold button. Fourth, I thought I would get more range by buying a 2.4 GHz. That is not true. My 900 mhz worked better. Fifth, I get an echo of my voice when I am talking.

I do believe this phone is too expensive for what you get and I found there are better options. I am sticking to a 900 mhz phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Really Could Use a Mute Button, June 9, 2001
By
This review is from: Uniden TRU246 2.4 GHz Digital Spread Spectrum Cordless Phone (Office Product)
This is the first cordless I ever had, and I love mine. It's so nice to have the freedom to talk and do other things like fix supper without holding the phone, which I do with the help of an extra piece of equipment that I bought, a Jensen headset I found at Best Buy.

I have to say that the belt clip that comes with it is worthless; it just doesn't stay on and could be the cause of major damage to the phone if allowed to fall to the floor from hip-height. I just carry mine in my pocket. Hopefully they won't say I'll come down with hip cancer for it being there!

I was attracted to it by the fact that it was digital (extremely important), the lighted keypad (very important), and its good looks (also very important). It's identical to Uniden's TRU 241 except that it has the capability for caller ID, which I do not subscribe to, but the lighted screen looks cool nevertheless. Sizewize, it's between a typical corded phone's handset and a wireless; I'm still not all that comfortable with having keys up against my face when I talk, which is another reason I much prefer the headset. The sound is normal as far as I'm concerned. Also, the range is fine for how I use it...from bedroom to patio to livingroom to kitchen and back. I'm not going to pretend it's a wireless and try to take it further than it needs to go. The range it has is fine with me.

I would give it 5 stars if it weren't for the fact that it has no mute switch...this is awkward if you're talking on the phone and you have to go to the bathroom....there may be some sounds that it may not be too cool for your friends to hear! It never occurred to me when I bought it that it wouldn't have one, every phone I've had has had one...I found this kind of an unpleasant surprise.

I use it all the time, although I've learned that during a power outage or bad storm the phone dies; I understand all cordless phones do this--if the base is without power the phone can't receive its signal. So it's a good idea to keep a corded phone around in the event you need to call the power company. After a month and a half, though, I can say that I have had no trouble with it. I'm generally very pleased with my purchase, and I'd buy another one, especially if they put a mute button on the next model.

I've had my new UNIDEN TRU246 for a couple weeks and I love it. It's clear (even in my little 600 sq foot apt), the features are easy to use, the handset feels comfortable on my hand and ear. And best of all, it stands up!

2.0 out of 5 stars Good until the buttons stopped working:, August 20, 2003

I was pretty happy with the phone until, shortly after a year, the buttons became increasingly harder to push. I've contacted Uniden and they said they would only fix it for free if it was a "known problem." Not surprisingly, they said this was not such a case. Now what I want to know is if anyone else here on Amazon has had this same problem? If so, let's make it "known" so that Uniden will either fix it for free or give us a replacement. Though at this point, I'd rather have my money back than rely on their products and Customer Service again.

I loved the phone when I first received it. However, after around 4 months the buttons stopped working. I basically need to jam my finger about an inch into the phone in order to dial a number. It sounds like a common problem with this phone. I suggest staying away from it.
