I've had this phone for over a year now. It has an excellent feature set, but has some limitations of which I was not aware at time of purchase. Here are some features and drawbacks that others have not mentioned here:

+ Remote message retrieval (especially nice w/ above feature)

3.0 out of 5 stars One reason not to buy
I've had this phone for about a year and it's functions and appearance are better than the AT&T, Uniden, and Siemens phones I previously purchased; HOWEVER, the only reason I don't care for this phone is because the highest volume level is still way too low. The rest of the features are very modern and wonderful, but how can you enjoy it, if you can't hear anyone????

4.0 out of 5 stars Know the limitations before you buy, November 20, 2003
This review is from: Uniden TRU5865-2 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID, Dual Handsets & Extra Charging Cradle (Office Product)
I've had this phone for over a year now. It has an excellent feature set, but has some limitations of which I was not aware at time of purchase. Here are some features and drawbacks that others have not mentioned here:

+ Handsets each have speaker phone capabilities
+ Remote message retrieval (especially nice w/ above feature)
+ Intuitive base controls. Finally a decent user interface on a phone's base station.
+ Handsets are quite durable, surviving a few unplanned trips to the kitchen floor from the counter without damage. Bad kitty!

- Unit doesn't support more than two handsets.

Here's the bombshell:
- You can't use both handsets at the same time. Let me say that again: only one handset can be in use at any given time! If you want more than one person to take part in your side of the conversation, you have to use the speaker phone function of one of the handsets, or use one handset and the speaker phone built into the base station.

It's that last little gem of a drawback that makes me give 4 out of 5 stars. This would be my ultimate phone if not for that.

This review is from: Uniden TRU5865-2 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID, Dual Handsets & Extra Charging Cradle (Office Product)
After problems with the 2.4 Ghz phones interferring with our wireless connection, we decided to try this unit. So far, the computers work as does the phone. It's easy to program (excellent directions) and attractive to look at. The range seems to be more than adequate for our needs. We recommend it for those who have a wireless connection in their homes (and anyone else who just wants a good cordless telephone).

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful phone...very happy with purchase, November 8, 2003
This review is from: Uniden TRU5865-2 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID, Dual Handsets & Extra Charging Cradle (Office Product)
I bought this to replace my last uniden that had a problem with the buttons not *connecting* when i pushed them. When I went out looking for a new phone I was trying to get a phone without the same kind of lighted large round buttons that had the problem but most of the phones (uniden and all the others) had this kind. This phone has smaller (but not tiny) not lighted buttons but the large orange display lights the area enough for me to make a call if its dark.

The large orange display is very easy to read and you don't have to be right on top of the phone to see it. Excellent! It has the standard features like *flash* (but the flash button is nice and big), last number redial (the last 3 in fact), speed dial, caller id and call waiting caller id, etc.

A feature that I haven't had before that I appreciate very much is a flashing light that lets me know that i have a phone call in my voice mail. This is wonderful as sometimes I would come home and if i didnt pick up the phone I wouldnt know. Having voice mail and not an answering machine sometimes I miss messages but with this I won't. I didnt even know they could do this and I think its great.

There are also different ring tones (like cell phones) besides the standard rings and I can't wait to play the holiday ring tone in December.

This unit came with 2 phones and a base unit that you can make calls on. I wanted 2 phones so someone wouldnt be constantly be taking the phone downstairs when I needed it upstairs or visa versa. Now I have one in each place. Great! I could have bought a system with *add-able* phones but frankly this was much more cost effective. Many units where you has to purchase the second handset came to more initially (with the cost of the second unit being in the range of $50-$80.

I am very happy with my purchase. This is probably the third of 4th uniden phone I have bought and while they were all good this one is clearly the best and the sound is wonderful. I cant tell this phone from a lined phone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Slick clean looks cover sloppy audio, January 30, 2003
This review is from: Uniden TRU5865-2 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID, Dual Handsets & Extra Charging Cradle (Office Product)
This phone has great package appeal and makes remarkable claims all over the box "Increased Clarity", "Less Interference", "The most powerful phones ever built" and even a cool chart showing that 5.8Hz is 5 times higher on the "Clarity Indicator" (whatever that is?)
But the fact is, quality of this phones reception is weaker than all my 900 MHz phones. It has a constant static in the background. Uniden thought it might be interference from my microwave, refrigerator, or some other appliance anywhere in my house so I turning off all the breakers in my house except the one to the phone but the static persisted. Uniden ask me to exchange it for new phone so I did ......the static is even louder on this phone.
The range of use is also weaker than my old 900 MHz phones. Tell me again why 5.8 GHZ is better? My recommendation is to get a 900MHz phone.
Panasonic makes some really nice 900MHz phones for a lot less money.

But on the other hand, it really is a cool looking phone so if you are looking for hightech artwork for your house this just might be the phone for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars great for environments with wireless networks, September 28, 2005
This review is from: Uniden TRU5865-2 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID, Dual Handsets & Extra Charging Cradle (Office Product)
The speaker phone in the base and the handset is the best quality of any phone I have ever used. I have bought so many hands-free ear pieces that sounded great for a week, but then tanked - but I will clip the beltclip of this phone on my collar as I do chores and I can have a conversation without problems with folks who say I sound loud and clear. I have an 802.11 b&g compatible wireless network at home with 3 wireless routers in various location in my home. Wireless phones below the 5.8ghz range can wreak havoc with these networks. Having the extra handset that doesn't require a phone jack is a real blessing. When I built my house, I had no idea I would one day have an indoor rabbit as a pet - and rabbits chew cords, which necessitates moving phones to other locations where I didn't think to have phone jacks installed. Since the satellite phone requires that it first sit in the original handset, you know that your neighbor isn't listening to your conversation with their own handset the way it used to work in the early 1990s. The range isn't stellar... if I get more than 50 feet away, conversations get garbled, but part of that is due to the short wavelength of these microwave phones. Concrete is also a natural filter for RF (radio frequencies), so any concrete in the line of sight between your handset and base is going to cause interference. I have had these phones for 3 years and have had to replace the battery once - and unlike all the other portable phones I have had, this is the only one where I wasn't ready to just buy a whole new phone when the battery died. I like the easy-to-understand interface that doesn't require me to consult a manual and the speakerphone is a neck saver. I simply do not hold a phone to my ear anymore - it's not good for your neck or spine to crook your head for hours at a time and I like using a phone that requires no hands. I have owned several cordless phones and so far, this is the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Buy, April 11, 2004
This review is from: Uniden TRU5865-2 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID, Dual Handsets & Extra Charging Cradle (Office Product)
I bought the Uniden 5.8 model as a replacement for my old and worthless Seimens phone system. After having mixed feelings from reading the reviews and looking at the 'Uniden' company name that seemed almost unheard of, I decided to purchase the phone once and for all. Boy was it a good buy. I don't know about whoever said that the reception was horrible, but this baby rings out a nice, clear tone. The dual handsets make talking around the house simple and easy, and with the extra charging cradle, both my phones are always charged. The look is professional, and the glowing orange screen gives it a nice snazzy look. I love the way each handset is light and has its own 'speaker' mode.

Overall, this Uniden phone system is great, and it hasn't let me down since I bought it several months ago. If perhaps you have a larger family and you're looking for a Uniden package with 3 phones instead of 2 that comes with a headset, check out the Uniden PowerMax 5.8; it is a awesome deal too.

2.0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE SPEAKERPHONE ON HANDSET, May 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Uniden TRU5865-2 5.8 GHz Cordless Phone with Caller ID, Dual Handsets & Extra Charging Cradle (Office Product)
Had to return the phone because of poor speakerphone quality. I absolutely loved the feature when calling from home, but when I called to home from work, it sounded liked I was talking to someone with[$]walkie-talkie. The speakerphone also mutes out background noises when no one is talking, this makes callers think the call was dropped. Reviews I have read on 2.4 vs 5.8 GHz technology suggest little overall advantage in clarity, definitely not worth the extra dough.

Address book entries reduce available caller ID list. Poor range. 900Mhz DSS much greater range. Very disappointing. It does not interfere with my wireless broadband router on 2.4Ghz. but neither does the 900Mhz phones. I would go with the 900Mhz Digital Spread Spectrum (DSS).

After seeing this phone in Popular Science I thought I would give it a try. The phone is nice looking and is feature rich but the speaker phones on the base and handset(s) is terrible. The microphone on the base is actually underneath the phone. The voice quality with the hand sets is not much better. If you want to sacrifice sound quality for features this will work for you, but I'm going back to my old Panasonic cordless they are the best.
