5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Amount of Capabilities
This phone has EVERYTHING including the crucial remote call screen monitoring which many other phone makers have done away with! I can't believe manufacturers don't include this on phones anymore. Well UNIDEN has!

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks Better Than it Works
I bought this phone to replace a Uniden 2.4GHz. I figured that it would be an improvement over the 2.4GHz and I've long been a fan of Uniden. Boy was I wrong. It does have some nice features. I especially liked the speaker phone in the handset and the Directlink 2-way radio capability. However, no amount of features can make up for the terribly low range. I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Amount of Capabilities, January 5, 2005
This review is from: Uniden TRU8880-2 5.8 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with Dual Handsets and Answering System (Black/Silver) (Office Product)
This phone has EVERYTHING including the crucial remote call screen monitoring which many other phone makers have done away with! I can't believe manufacturers don't include this on phones anymore. Well UNIDEN has!

Also amazingly included is: Room monitoring and Walkie-talkie ability, and a handy Do-Not-Disturb feature!

The only thing wrong with the above is it rings your phone too when being activated. This is a no-no! It rings two short ring but it is annoying when in a store or monitoring a sleeping baby. Incredible goof by Uniden! Quite possibly this "ringing" might be for privacy purposes warnings for the other party.

Another thing missing is a "quiet" feature to turn off warning sounds like above or to do adjustments silently. Can be handy sometimes.

The sound is excellent and very clear, both when speaking and listening. The room monitoring is very sensitive and you can pick up amazing sound.

Another annoying thing is that there is a slight delay in the ringing of the extra phones from the base ringer. This delay sometimes is disconcerting.

The walkie-talkie ability is capable of over 1 mile (according to Uniden) but only in line-of-sight. I had mixed results. In some areas I could go deep in a store and still remain in contact. In other areas where this is lots of obstruction I could not get the same reception per distance. All in all, I still think it is better than nothing. You can always move around and see if you can make contact instead of walking back to the car to talk. So it's better than nothing.

I found out if there is a lot of criss-crossing type of obstructions between two phones the reception was non-existence.

Another annoying thing is that when the phone rings it does not light up the keypad and LCD when you pick it up. Gasp! A big oversight by the manufacturer. But hey, most cordless phones don't even have key lights!

This phone covers near all bases and then some! I am giving it 5 stars despite some oversight by the manufacturer because this is the only phone that I know of that has everything I was looking for (and then some)! Did I mention the handsets can even become speakephones!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks Better Than it Works, September 16, 2004
This review is from: Uniden TRU8880-2 5.8 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with Dual Handsets and Answering System (Black/Silver) (Office Product)
I positioned the base unit away from all of my other electronics as the instruction booklet suggested. However, I still started to get static in the line a near as 20' from the base and lost the line as close as 30'.

BTW - When I contacted the Uniden customer service, I spoke to a rep and received no help. In fact, they were very "put out" by my questions and I was treated like an idiot. Not pleasant.

I would suggest avoiding this phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Features - Know How To Use Them, June 6, 2006

This review is from: Uniden TRU8880-2 5.8 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with Dual Handsets and Answering System (Black/Silver) (Office Product)
While some gripes about this phone are warrented (silent mode, etc), some gripes I've read here are not. One user said you couldn't dial long-distance - but if you press # or * while viewing a number, it will add a 1, or remove an area code - swapping the visible number with alternate modes of dialing - very useful! Also love the fact that I can have one base and one phone line, and have 10 handsets located throughout the house. I can page any room. Now if my wife would put the handset back on the base when done using it, I could page that room without it ringing halfway across the house :)

I do wish the handset you were paging *from* would not ring also. It does make locating phones a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars very happy, September 12, 2006
This review is from: Uniden TRU8880-2 5.8 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with Dual Handsets and Answering System (Black/Silver) (Office Product)
I am very picky about my phone and tried out many before settling on this Uniden. I have had this phone for a few years and have been very happy with it and its convenience. I have the 2 handsets and am in the process of replacing some of the older models in my homes with additional handsets of this model. I love that I can listen to messages from any handset, not just the base. It stores and dials numbers very affectively. You can easily turn off the beep which was a complaint below. Definately would recommend this phone.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hate is not a strong enough description..., January 4, 2006

to tell how I feel about this phone. I'll just make a list of my gripes:

1. Handsets do not ring simultaneously. One will start ringing for a few seconds prior to the other.

2. The base unit rings when the handset finder button is pushed making it very difficult to hear the handsets ringing and therefore, difficult to locate them.

3. It is impossible to dial a long-distance number from the caller-id list. It dials the number; but fails to add a 1 to the beginning causing a misdial and there is no manual way to add the one. So, I have to look up the number on the caller-id, either memorize it or write it down and then manually redial it. Arrrrgh!

4. I used to have an AT&T phone that would indicate if a message was left for a particular call on the caller-id screen. Then all I had to do to hear that message was to push the mailbox button. There was no necessity to listen to every single message if I only wanted to hear certain ones. Oh, I miss that phone...

5. The ringtones are annoying.

6. I have yet to be able to remotely access my messages. I am not technologically-challenged either, so it is not simply a case of user-error. Maybe there is some mystical way to do it. If that's the case, it is not user-friendly enough and needs to be simplified.

Bottom line - do not buy this phone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Has Potential-Is Uniden Listening?, March 22, 2006
This review is from: Uniden TRU8880-2 5.8 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with Dual Handsets and Answering System (Black/Silver) (Office Product)
Short and sweet,

Liked the 5.8 true digital signal to and from the handset.

Liked the possibility of expandability.

Liked the speakerphone.

Didn't like how the letters imprinted on the face of the phone and answering unit began to wipe off within 5 months of use.

Didn't like how it will continuously beep after a message has been received without an option to disable the beep-very annoying when trying to nap!

Didn't like how the don't disturb mode doesn't turn ALL sounds off, in one sweep. The answer machine still can be heard as well as the base ringer. It'd be nice to have all sounds shutoff for naptime with my infant!

Didn't like how the customer service wasn't available and didn't return my message when I was prompted to leave a message.

I only purchased this phone after reading many favorable reviews (I forget where).

I don't recommend this phone to anyone except as a giveaway to someone who can't afford a phone.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a mistake, December 22, 2005
This review is from: Uniden TRU8880-2 5.8 GHz Digital Expandable Cordless Phone System with Dual Handsets and Answering System (Black/Silver) (Office Product)
I too purchased this clunker. Features sounded great. Brand - OKAY too. Unfortunately, the only thing it is good for is a baby monitor. Calls out or in have a terrible time hearing a conversation. Never again. I'm tossing it and buying another. So, what good is $100 + anyway. One good thing, if you sit next to the base station and call, it works fine.
