2.0 out of 5 stars Most will fail in 1 year
I have two different models of this Uniden 5.8 GHz phone system.
One is this exact model, the 1-line version.
Another one I have is the 2-line version.
Both of these models use the same type of handsets.
And with handsets from both systems plus a single handset I purchased separately, I have a total of 7 handsets.
Three of the handsets...

2.0 out of 5 stars Most will fail in 1 year, April 9, 2009
This review is from: Uniden TRU9480-4 5.8GHz Cordless Telephones with 4 Handsets (Electronics)
Three of the handsets have failed within 1 year.
The failure is what other people have complained about. The center selection button becomes unresponsive. When you push up/down, or left/right to select the menus or to view the caller ID log, nothing happens.
I've fixed this by taking the phone apart, finding where the pressure pads are under the button. I glued a small piece of aluminum foil on to where the pressure pad is. Aluminum foil is a good electrical conductor. It's a delicate process. I don't recommend doing this unless you know what you're doing. But if your handset is already dead/useless, give it a try. Put everything back together and the buttons work again.
Besides this annoying problem which requires me to take apart the phone to fix, the phone system works well. Speakerphone is nice and loud. The handsets are a good size and fit nicely in my hand. The screen is bright.
If I didn't know how to fix the handset/button problem and I had to buy replacement handsets for $40 a pop, I'd be really peeved.

3.0 out of 5 stars Keypad does not work after 1 year, February 27, 2009
By
I purchased this to replace my 2.4GHz Panasonic phone. The phone is a TRU9480-2 model.

The phone worked beautifully for the first year and then two problems developed.

1. The center round key in one of the handsets which allows to choose the phonebook, call logs and also to set the volume up and down has stopped working. When I contacted Uniden they said there is no fix for that and I need to buy a replacement handset (the cost of which is $40).

2. This is kind of strange issue. I have no problem with most callers. However with a small set of callers I have a lot of static issues and also issues with dropped calls (they cannot hear what I am saying and vice versa). This irritates me most as the set of callers this happens with are the ones I speak to often!!!

Besides the above two, I think the phone has excellent sound quality, good range and the speakers on base and handset are good and loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! I can't believe anyone could give this phone a bad review!!, September 24, 2008

I was reading the bad reviews left and couldn't believe it! Maybe I just lucked up and they lucked out. I don't know. But, I've had my phones for almost three years and can't stop raving about them! I can store up to 100 entries in the in-phone phone book, and have the option of copying any or all thoes numbers in any of the other handsets without touching the other handsets. There's phone book, caller id, message retrieval, room monitor and intercom in every handset. Also any or all the other handsets can join in on call conversations, unless you want to make it private which you can also do. They have several more features that I've never even used! These phones are amazing!! We monitored a baby sleeping in the back of the house while we watched a movie in the front (heard every peep she made) with this phone. Also if you get a call the phone in the monitored room doesn't ring but the others will. We leave them off the base for days at a time and they don't go dead. I've never had a phone jack in my kitchen and with these phones it doesn't matter. If you have the main base plugged into a phone jack all you have to have is an AC outlet and you can put the other handsets anywhere. If my hubby's watching tv I can call him in to dinner without yelling or leaving the kitchen using the intercom option.
What else can I say except, the reason I'm here today is I was looking for this phone for my mother for Christmas!

3.0 out of 5 stars When it works, it's great, March 27, 2008

We bought this set in June 2007 for use in a warehouse.

The good.
The set has a nice set of features. A variety of ring sounds to pick from. Each phone can be different. Volume control with easy access during a call. Takes standard 2.5mm headset plugin. Mute/hold feature. Adequate fidelity.

The bad.
About 4 months into use, one of the phones stopped working completely. About 6 months into use, another phone has display problems where the LCD display is unreadable, but the phone still works.

The phones were not abused or dropped. Changing batteries or bases did not help.

Feeling lucky?

1.0 out of 5 stars Miserable piece of electronics, September 5, 2007
We purchased this phone system because we needed to replace our aging wireless phones and wanted to ensure that the new phones didn't interfere with the wireless lan. While pricey, we needed four handsets in order to replace our old phones.

Big mistake. From the outset these phones have been a pain. Terrible reception, even 10 feet from the receiver. The phone constantly drops calls registering as out of range (This is only a matter of feet from the receiver.)

For the money, you can get much better equipment. Learn from my mistake and pass on this.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the wasted time, June 28, 2008
By
The good: The range, sound quality, answering machine, and features (e.g. caller ID, remote message retrieval) were good.

The bad: At around two months after purchase, I unplugged the base station from power and then plugged it in again. It came up with an error code "E4". I called Uniden product support, who told me that the base station was dead, and needed to be replaced. From my perspective, however, the replacement would be just as likely to fail in two months. I really don't feel like wasting my time like that. Therefore, I returned it and got a different manufacturer's phone instead. (Four syllables. Rhymes with "tonic".)
