Now for the bad news. The computer software supplied to allow your computer to sound an alarm and/or record the video from a selected camera (can be changed each hour) might work on your computer (Windows only), but on my Vista/Home Premium computer it will run correctly until the end of the day, then it gets weird, really weird - even Task Manager cannot shut it down, you have to shut the computer down and power up from scratch. Customer service claimed to have never heard of this before, and had no solution. Hard to believe!
The system can display or record only one camera at a time except for the ultra low resolution quad camera display which you probably won't find useful. Unless you activate the computer program, there is no alarm function - so who is going to peer at the monitor continuously?
Don't buy this system without thinking through exactly how you plan to use it. I wanted to know what was going on with my mail and newspaper deliveries/losses. This system was no help.
"DO NOT EXPOSE IT TO RAIN OR MOISTURE." Furthermore, "DO NOT EXPOSE THE EQUIPMENT TO HIGH TEMPERATURES, AND AVOID LEAVING THE EQUIPMENT IN DIRECT SUNLIGHT FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES. HEAT CAN DAMAGE THE CASE OR ELECTRICAL PARTS."
This is gonna be a problem for me. I had planned to place a camera on the side of my house near the backyard. The camera would not face direct sunlight, but my backyard receives direct sunlight yr. long. Since I live in Vegas, temperatures in the backyard (shaded or not) could reach as high as 118 degrees (F) during the day for the entire summer months (May-Sept.) In addition, when it rains here in Vegas, it pours hard! I hate to return it, but I can't use it for its sole purpose, which is to record the actions of the vandals next door.
Hope this review helps.
My main beefs are as follows:
1) I thought this system would record. NO. Must have a PC running XP or Win 7. So if you don't have a computer running this you are SOL. (I don't), In order to make the sucker work as anticipated (eg RECORD motion activated video) you must purchase a PC as well as the Uniden surveillance system - bringing it up to the price for a stand alone digital recording system.
2) My Mac will run Win 7. (nice, Eh?), but I still can't use the software!
NOTE WELL: the software is on a minidisc - so YOU CANNOT PUT IT IN A SLOT TYPE optical drive, guaranteed to break it. PS, other reviewers give the software poor ratings, I won't comment.
3) No availability of internet access to the data without tweeks.
4) you can't use your laptop you take with you because in order for the system to be a) motion activated and b) actually record, you have to leave the computer hooked up to it. It is the COMPUTER that is the RECORDER.
This last is relates to my key complaint - by the time you buy a computer to be part of the system, you may as well have purchased a good DVR system which is complete in itself! And again, it does not have IP address for remote accessing.
For those who want it anyway, read this: http://socialimagination.blogspot.in/2013/03/configuring-uniden-camera-system-to.html
Two other adverse observations: When attempting to use the "indoor camera" (flat one without the weather shields), it has a stand foot to prop on flat surface. This broke off all too easily as I was pulling into the deployed position. I did not force it I was being careful - it broke anyway.Read more ›
