4.0 out of 5 stars Very short book to educate and entertain children, May 29, 2011
By
"Unidentified Flying Objects" is one volume from a lengthy series of more than 25 books that Isaac Asimov wrote to explain astronomy to children called Library of the Universe. Each volume has full-color photographs on every page. This book is only 32 pages, which includes an additional information page, a glossary, and an index.

Isaac Asimov is known as the Grandmaster of Science Fiction, but he wrote hundreds of books in all genres. He was quite prolific writing popular science books, and he was no stranger to writing books to children. Asimov always wrote with clear, direct language and never talked down to his readers. He never treated children like children but rather as curious adults in training who deserved to have their curiosity stimulated and their questions answered.

This book manages to cover a lot of ground in 30 pages: pre-modern sightings of things in the sky, the modern UFO phenomenon, the three kinds of close encounters, distinguishing hoaxes from people who really believe they had encounters, exploring possible alternative explanations to UFO sightings, considering the likelihood of other intelligent life somewhere in space, considering the likelihood that intelligent life has visited earth, and teaching what YOU should do if you see an unidentified flying object.

Adults don't have too much to get out of this book, and adults probably have no reason to buy it unless you are a huge Asimov fan like I am. But it would be quite entertaining and informative for a child between the ages of 6 and 13.
