Format: Paperback
This brief (145 pgs.) 1991 book by Jon Fisher (author of an earlier book, Last Frontiers on Earth, also published by the famous/infamous Loompanics Unlimited press) is a fascinating work for anyone who has ever considered just packing it all up, and leaving civilization behind. You can't do that by just moving out into the woods in an industrial country (the IRS may still find you, eventually, for example), but if you move to such an uninhabited ocean island, it may actually be possible.

Be forewarned, however: As Fisher points out, "many empty islands are uninhabited for one of three good reasons: they are barren sandy or rocky places where there is little vegetation; or they are active volcanoes; or they are tiny atolls with very little land area above sea level." So don't expect a "Gilligan's Island" paradise.

With that caveat, Fisher provides a detailed description (including precise location) of more than 50 islands, as well as a description of their history (where applicable and/or interesting), and their pros and cons.

Not all of the islands are ENTIRELY "uninhabited"; Fisher points out that the population of Henderson Island is "now around 50," but "keeps falling away as Pitcairners move away." McQuarie Island has scientific research conducted on it, and so on.

Fisher's 1991 book is also somewhat "dated" now; it remains highly interesting for the "dreamer" among us...

This recent book (1991) is well researched and will assist those explorers who have GPS (he gives precise lat/long of each Island).
Those of us searching for existing sovereignties that need help getting an ISO 3166-1 code to entitle them to an Internet top level domain (i.e. like .aa or .uk) will also not be disappointed.

This is the opinion of a Sovereign Individual, and does not necessarily represent the opinions of Laissez Faire City.

I enjoyed reading this well-researched excellent book. I love the subject of geography and I love exploring. If someone has the resources and wants to travel a lot for enjoying and exploring, this is a book for them to take with them. This will truly take them to new frontiers. I thank the author for the time that he spent researching and writing this book. I also thank the original publisher, Loompanics Unlimited in Port Townsend, Washington, for publishing and selling the book originally. I'm sorry to see that Loompanics Unlimited went out of business in 2006 because the head of Loompanics, Mike Hoy, retired. Loompanics and the great selection of books they published and sold are truly missed.
