Book Description

January 1, 2002

The last time you whistled a tune or hummed a song-why did you choose that one? You may not consider yourself a musical person, but your little act of unintended music may be the key to unlocking within you a wealth of unsuspected creativity-a kind of creativity that goes way beyond music, too.

Lane Arye, PhD, a musician himself, focuses on the music that people do not intend to make. Using the highly regarded psychological model called Process Work, developed by Arnold Mindell, PhD, Arye has been teaching students around the world how to awaken their creativity, using music as the starting point, but including all art forms and ways of expression.

The unintentional appears at moments when some hidden part of us, something beyond our usual awareness, suddenly tries to express itself. If we start paying attention to what is trying to happen rather than to what we think should happen, we open the door to self-discovery and creativity. Sometimes what we regard as "mistakes" in self-expression are in fact treasures.

The book is rich with real-life stories, ideas, and practical techniques for unlocking creativity, which Arye dispenses with humor, insight, and enthusiasm.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This refreshingly original book is beautifully written, heartfelt, and soulful. With fun and excitement, it unveils a new world of music and creativity. The language itself reads like music." --Arnold Mindell, author of Dreaming While Awake

"An utterly new approach! This book has profoundly changed the way I play and teach music. Unintentional Music magically touches your soul at the same time it awakens your creativity." --Magdalena Schatzmann, Conservatory of Music in Bern, Switzerland

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Book!, December 22, 2004
This review is from: Unintentional Music: Releasing Your Deepest Creativity (Paperback)
This book is a constant source of inspiration for me. I reach for it sometimes when I am feeling stuck and want to wake up some awareness that may be trying to unfold. The exercises at the end of each chapter are so rich that they can be visited over and over and bring new discovery each time. I am an improvising musician, a body worker, and a Process Work student. I have never read a book that so lovingly explains the creative process and supports and values the deepest expressions of our soul through the process of opening to the unintentional sounds, dreams, schemes that are constantly around us trying to get our attention. This book has helped me grow and work and play and live. I recommend it to anyone looking for inspiration on their life's journey. I recommend it to musicians/artists that want to tap into their deepest resources and to individuals who want to say yes to the artist within.

3.0 out of 5 stars interesting, valuable as well, March 13, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Unintentional Music: Releasing Your Deepest Creativity (Paperback)
'Unintentional Music' is an interesing book, all though it was not what I was hoping for. Unfortunately, it doesn't actually go into finding 'your deepest creativity', which is why I bought it. It deals with the process work of Arny Mindell, directly here in application to music. However, it is still understandable by those who are not familiar with Mindell's work (kudos for that). Basic subject: using the unintential 'mistakes' made in creative acts to discover deeper psychological (and subconscious) elements effecting our outer life. Probably will be most appreciated by musicians, and open minded therapists.
