3.0 out of 5 stars Welcome the "Uninvited Guest" into Your Home
Most straight to video film projects usually serve as dust magnets in video stores. However people are discovering "Uninvited Guest". This movie is generating positive buzz here in Washington and has the potential to become a cult classic. My actual rating is 3 1/2 stars, but that doesn't diminish my affinity for this thriller.

3.0 out of 5 stars Welcome the "Uninvited Guest" into Your Home, January 7, 2001
This review is from: Uninvited Guest (DVD)
Most straight to video film projects usually serve as dust magnets in video stores. However people are discovering "Uninvited Guest". This movie is generating positive buzz here in Washington and has the potential to become a cult classic. My actual rating is 3 1/2 stars, but that doesn't diminish my affinity for this thriller.

Mekhi Phifer as Silk is head and shoulders above the rest of the cast, although Mari Morrow as Debbie and William-Christopher Stephens as Trey turn in credible performances. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the rest of the cast whose portrayals are uneven at best, in some instances unbelievable and in Mel Jackson's case as Howard, downright excruciating. Be that as it may, the plot is extremely well conceived and the script offers some great twists and turns which ultimately make up for some of the acting deficiencies. Moreover, both Mari Morrow and Malinda Williams serve up the requisite sex appeal to keep male viewers interested. However, Kim Fields' cameo as the store owner only made me wish that she was occupying Williams' role.

Despite my pointed criticisms, I was thoroughly entertained and I have been recommending it to all of my friends since. If you like this movie, I would also suggest that during your next trip to the video store pick up "Trois", another film with an African-American ensemble cast. It's great to see Black Hollywood exhibiting so much talent and creativity that are providing some truly exciting entertainment alternatives.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laughable but cool..., March 20, 2005
This review is from: Uninvited Guest (DVD)
Okay, I read the first few reviews and I must straighten up a couple of things.
#1 There was no interracial sex going on, so I don't know what that reviewer was talking about.
#2 The subtitles can be turned off. I turned them off two seconds after the movie started. You have to click on "English" twice as though you're actually turning it on, but it works.

Now onto the movie: Originally I thought this movie was absolutely stupid and predictable. A woman being so free to roam her home with a stranger while her husband is more concerned with his script is highly unlikely. Being thrown into a jacuzzi and not experiencing the heat is all but impossible. A black man letting another black man into his home and not watching him the whole time or asking to see his car that supposedly has problems is flat-out not going to happen. A friend going to another friend's house, being asked to leave, being so indignant about leaving, and then not having any plans to interrupt why she wanted her to leave seems really far-fetched. Why someone would have a gun in one hand and use the other one to fight instead is just laughable. And for a man to be so in love that he's willing to let a woman he loves walk so freely when he's so dangerous is almost embarassing.
But the plot thickens! I appreciate the "no hesitation" which added a little realism to the plot. And when I started finding out the reasoning behind all of the comments I made above, then I was like "Ohhhh! Okay!" On top of that, honestly, Mekhi Phifer is so damn sexy, I really stopped caring about the plot and just admired him. It was even more interesting to see his ex-wife act in the film with him and do the two things that they argued about publicly to other people (well, "act" like they were doing anyway). You know how Monique said Denzel died sexy? Well, the last man in the end who died (I won't say who) died very sexy (minus all the slobber! Gross!) The "convicts" sense of humor cracked me up too. And Wanye? Wow. I would've laughed at someone choosing him as the thug, but he did a great job.
This movie is definitely on the low-budget side, but they picked the right actors/actresses to make this movie decent.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a Load?!?!?! (I only gave it one because I HAD to..., June 28, 2008
This review is from: Uninvited Guest (DVD)
Ok, To all the people who gave this movie good reviews, you all need to get off your acid trips! My boy bought this movie for us and it's better used as a glass coaster. The movie is choppy and extremely unrealistic -- like another reviewer said. Yes, there are plot twists, and good-looking actors/actresses but their work doesn't help the stupidity of the movie. If anything, it intensifies it.
The sex scenes and dialogue are teasing and tempting, but we NEVER really see anyone naked. The way the wife reacts throughout the ENTIRE movie--total BS!!! The way the Howie (The Husband) just passes her up throughout the whole movie--total BS!!! The way the cop at the door just gets blindsided by Pfeifer with a blow to the back of the head -- in broad daylight -- Absolute garbage!!!

So you have good looking actors who can't act (except Pfeifer, because he's the veteran), a terrible story-line that becomes trite and predictable, and a horrible ending, which is also predictable. What a Piece of (work)!!

If this kind of movie is your taste, then have at it! Knock yourself out. Don't spend more than $5 or $6 for it (including shipping) -- it's definitely not worth it.

Oh, and the review who talked about the black and white issues -- you're too delusional to me -- other than the cop and waiter in the restaurant, there are NO OTHER WHITE PEOPLE IN THE MOVIE. Oh and Kim Fields' name shouldn't even be in the credits.

Just my two sense...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Movie was Very Very Good, July 6, 2005
This review is from: Uninvited Guest (DVD)
I do not know why Someone is downing the movie for interracial scence there was not a white actress in the movie. Mari Morrow is Black and Italian and she is considered a Black Actress. She was in How to be a Player and a lot of other Black Films. I thought this film was very good. The Plot could have been better but the ending was unexpected to me. The cast was strong.

4.0 out of 5 stars Give this a try, November 1, 2005
This review is from: Uninvited Guest (DVD)
I wasn't expecting much with this purchase. I didn't know anybody in the film but it was recommended to me by a knowledgeable friend. You know what? It was pretty cool. Mekhi Phifer has got to get more roles. Mari Morrow is pretty hot. Malinda Williams and Mel Jackson should not be unknown actors! We have to seek out more of their work. But this film or at least rent it somewhere and you will get a very pleasant surprise!

Phifer was real good in this. He was a bad guy that you loved, and laughed at cause he played it so good. If you like underground movies like this that didn't hit the big screen, and are better than the ones at the big screen sometimes, I suggest Lockdown as well.

Buy this movie.

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't Let Strangers Into your Home!!, January 26, 2001
This review is from: Uninvited Guest (DVD)
Stranger walks into the home of flawed couple and proceeds to make their life "pure hell". Debbie is married to screenwiter/postal worker, Howard, who is oblivious to her needs and blatantly ignores her. Their current anniversary is marred with betrayal and a violent intrusion as the stranger, Silk, (Mekhi Phifer)unloads his fury on the confused pair. Along with Melinda Williams and his co-writing cronies, they are held hostage as Phifer intensifies his cruelty. Finally, after several plot twists we discover that Silk is not the only "bad guy". The story goes deeper as does the betrayal, leaving us to wonder who is the "good guy"? Phifer, has always displayed an awesome potential. Silk, is a complex character, who has multiple personalities; but at the root is "pure evil". Phifer shows range and an inherent aptitude for this character. Think of "Robert DeNiro" from "Cape Fear" or Matt Damon, in "The Talented Mr. Ripley and there you will find the imbedded ingredients that produce "Silk". This is not a bad movie, but you may get confused at the end. Solid acting performance by Phifer, he's not just a pretty face."Note" Wanya Morris, of Boys to Men fame has a supporting role as, Mo, "the resident thug" of the group.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should of kept it a little more simple at the end.., May 1, 2002

Good movie, great acting, and gripping plot. But somewhere at the end the changes become a little overwhelming.

Unlike some of the reviewers, I was attached to the movie from the start. The naughty Silk and the wanton girlie/wife was actually just as intense as any other sexy thriller. I followed the characters and the plot right down to the near end. After the first 2 twist things begin to unravel and become unbeleivable. I appreciated the creative effort, but unfortunately the attempts become a little too much to beleive.

Good film though and I am recommending it to friends. I'll let them give their own oppinion on the twists and turns.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend it. Very entertaining!, March 31, 2001

I've seen this movie 4 times in the last few weeks. I really enjoy seeing Black people on film. I loved the movie, the story line, the characters. Sure the acting may have "appeared" to be a little weak in some areas (e.g. Howie), but he was playing a part. It had all the elements (cheating, lying, loving, violence, suspense, twists). It is a good flick. I've recommended it to ALL my friends. It was like Basic Instinct, Fatal Attraction, and Soul Food (beautiful people) all rolled into one. You have to see it from the very beginning and you much watch til the very end. If you miss the very end, you'll be disappointed and rate it a B flick. If you miss the beginning, you won't enjoy the end as much.
