Editorial Reviews

Review

This album starts a new phase in the Corciolli's career. With his approach to mysticism, he added Latin lyrics (translated to Portuguese in the booklet), Gregorian chant, Arabian chant, and female and male vocals, using all of these components as a basis for composing a harmonious work full of dynamics and hypnotic textures (e.g., the suite "Operis Processio"). The collaboration of Adriana Mezzadri's voice, Oswaldinho do Acordeon on accordion, and Krucis' Arabian chants and tambura combining different styles, rhythms, and movements with part of the recording sessions at São Bento Cloister (in São Paulo, Brazil) and mixing done at Sound Techniques in Boston, MA, this resulted in an inspired work that impressed Brazilians. The artwork is also a highlight, containing images from the 14th and 15th centuries. This CD was released in Europe with different artwork and received the blessing of Pope John Paul II. Success in the European market resulted in their participation on the CD The Healing, a compilation featuring several musicians, including Vangelis, Andreas Vollenweider, Kitaro, Era, Enigma, Yanni, and Clannad, among others. This CD is a perfect balance between age-old sacred chant and modern vocals and instruments. --Review by Cesar Lanzarini, AllMusic Guide

Product Description

With Unio Mystica (Mystical Union), Corciolli presents a beautiful seven piece suite, inspired by the medieval alchemy and union of male and female principles of the soul in communion with the Divine. Featuring Gregorian Chants, female vocals and inspired arrangements of piano and keyboards, Unio Mystica´s highlights are the mezzo-soprano voice of Adriana Mezzadri and the accordion of Brazilian virtuoso Oswaldinho. Musical selections from Unio Mystica have been featured on international compilations among artists like Vangelis, Sarah Brigthman, Luciano Pavarotti, Era, Enigma, Hans Zimmer, and Plácido Domingo. When released in Europe, Unio Mystica received a special Blessing of Pope John Paul II. Partially recorded in the São Bento´s Monastery in São Paulo, Brazil. Mixed at the SoundTechniques´ Studio in Boston, Massachusetts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost like being at an ancient mystical ceremony July 17, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
As you listen to this 1997 production it is very easy to close your eyes and imagine that you are observing some ancient mystical ceremony, complete with incense and smoke. Indeed the cover notes advise that it should be filed under New Sacred Music. But although it does have the qualities mentioned above, those who a not enamored with Gothic music should not dismiss this album. It contains much that will appeal to the lover of Enya or indeed, Adiemus. Most of the songs are sung in Latin for which there is a translation into English on the sleeve notes, and there is also a certain amount of Arabic thrown in for good measure. The delightful vocals of Adriana Mezzedri dominate this CD, and often the Gregorian chants of the San Bento Monastery in San Paulo, Brazil can be heard too. The album was recorded in San Paulo and mastered at Sound Techniques in Boston. Sonically it is an excellent recording. And will satisfy even the most fussy audiophile. The track that I have selected above is Lumen Naturae - the light of nature. Supporting Adtrianas voice are sparsely instrumented textures of piano, sitar, synthesizer, human whistling, accordions and various percussion. All used to very good effect. A quotation on the sleeve notes from the Golden Treasury of The Philosophers Stone reminds us that:Things found in the upper kingdom are also found in the lower kingdom.
That which is shown in Heaven is always found on Earth. Fire and water are opposite poles. Blessed is the man who manages to unite them. All I can say is that Corciolli certainly seem to have been very successful in achieving this objective
