Product Description

The Union Butterfield 1580(UNC)/1580(UNF) uncoated, high-speed steel thread forming tap has a round shank with a square end and is used for cold-forming right-hand threads in ductile materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze, low-carbon steel, and leaded steel. It is available in two different ANSI thread specification standards: UNC (Unified Coarse) and UNF (Unified Fine). It is suitable for threading through holes (extending through the workpiece) and blind or bottoming holes (with only one opening). The Rol-Rite design reduces tapping torque. The spiral lobe pattern with no grooves makes this design especially suitable for interrupted holes and for through holes in thin sections.

Right-hand threads are designed to tighten when a head or nut is rotated clockwise (the most common threading direction). High-speed steel (HSS) is a common general-purpose steel for cutting tools and is compatible with a variety of materials. With no coating or surface treatment, this uncoated tool can be used on a broad range of materials and provides an economical alternative to coated tools. The square end shank helps to minimize rotation in the tool holder. This thread forming tap can be used in machines such as drill presses or lathes.

Union Butterfield 1580 taps are available with a variety of chamfers. This tap conforms to ANSI standards and can create threads to a depth 2 ½ times its diameter. Taps in this series are suitable for ANSI 2B and 3B tolerance classes: 2B is an average quality fit for commercial and industrial fasteners; 3B produces close-tolerance fasteners that resist loosening, as in aerospace applications.

Taps produce internal threads in previously formed holes and can be used in machines (such as drill presses) or with hand tools. Common types of taps include hand taps, spiral point taps, spiral flute taps, thread forming taps, and pipe taps. Hand taps (straight-flute taps) collect chips in the straight flutes of the tool; spiral point taps push chips through holes ahead of the tool; and spiral flute taps pull chips back from the tip of the tool, up and out the hole. Thread forming taps, also known as cold forming taps, press rather than cut to create threads in a drilled hole, and no chips are created. Pipe taps create threads in pipes and pipe fittings. Each thread type designates a thread profile and each type is identified with an abbreviation. In the U.S. and Canada, the Unified Thread Standard is the dominant thread type, including UNC (Unified Coarse), UNF (Unified Fine), and NPT (National Pipe Taper) threads, among others.

Precision Dormer manufactures cutting tools under the following brands: Precision Twist, Dormer, and Union Butterfield. The company has locations around the world, and provides tools adhering to ANSI, NAS, and DIN standards.

I use a lot of UB taps for very fine (4-40 thru 10-32) work, but This will be the second 1/4-20 UB thread forming that I've broken off with very little forming torque inside the "C" bit hole that I'm trying to tap. Yes, I use cutting fluid and yes I use the quarter-turn & back off method. I think maybe I'll stick to my widia taps for larger holes since I just can't believe how brittle the UB taps are. It's a shame. I remember when UB was a great name in tooling but I won't be buying any more, that's for sure.

Size: #8-32 Verified Purchase
I used this to tap a large aluminum heatsink, which was very troublesome for normal cutting bits. Paired with a No. 25 drill bit this made nice tight threads for my #8-32 screws. I'm a beginner at tapping softer metals and this made it extraordinarily easy. I was even able to use a power drill with this tap, and ended up with zero bad threads. I could not say the same of the practice holes I made with a cutting tap. The price is quite high compared to most cutting taps, but it was well worth it.
