4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Reform in an old package, May 16, 2007

This review is from: The Union Haggadah: Home Service for the Passover (Hardcover)
First written in 1923, this edition promotes the ideas and ideals of an American Judaism facing unions, women's rights, world war and a fast changing world. In its time it was used by what is now the largest organized identified Jewish population in existence. It is NOT modern, hip, or relative to the 21st century. but reflects the best efforts of a group of rabbis coming to grips with modernity. It provides an understandable ritual for English speakers who want to lean about Passover.

This review is from: The Union Haggadah: Home Service for the Passover (Hardcover)
I was born in 1940 and we used this Haggadah my first 15 -20 years. Reading it conjured up memories of sights and sounds I haven't thought about in years. In my youth I thought this Haggadah was 900 pages long and the Passover Seder would never end. The illustrations are simple black and white, opposed to the color ones found in most contemporary Haggadah. I recall each and every illustration. I recall drawing a few of them the night after our Passover celebration. Most everyone we shared the Seder with, our family and my parents friends, are gone now, but reading this Haggadah brought back their memories. I can picture and recall how most around the table dressed, spoke, smelled, eat . . . I could taste the food and hear the singing and prayers. Rabbis and Temples have come and gone over the years but now I have a copy of warm and happy Seders from my childhood. It amazes me on how such a small old book can so vividly bring back a meaningful part of my life. Music and art can do this also but now I know books can as well. Thanks for the memories. fromthedeskofmichael
