5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Reference Book!!
Despite the gray uniform on the cover, this Osprey reference book on Union Infantrymen continues the long tradition of the publisher to produce excellent, well laid out, fully illustrated and interesting references of historic units and conflicts! The always included color renderings provide historians, toy soldier collectors, re-enactors, and just plain interested...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay
For serious scholars this book is a bit light weight. By the way, the Iron Brigade got their nickname at South Mountain, not Antietem.

The always included color renderings provide historians, toy soldier collectors, re-enactors, and just plain interested people with some detail not normally found in books in this price range. Quick read, logical chapter groupings, and excellent photos and drawings - still at the top of their game!!

I bought this book to gather background for an historical novel I'm writing set in the Civil War. It was probably written for young adult readers, but it does give an astonishing amount of information about the Civil War and the infantry. It describes the choices of weapons along with their advantages and disadvantages. It describes the uniforms worn (wool). It also provides some insight into the soldiers' lives. Regardless of the target audience, the information is generally correct (read other interview) and if readers want a quick Civil War reference, this is a great buy!
