Editorial Reviews

Pairing renowned singer/guitarist Sam Pacetti with flat-picker/ producer Gabriel Valla, Union offers a philosophical series of folk/Americana songs. Sam and Gabriel's guitars serve in understated support of the material: Ft. Worth Blues, Steve Earle's tribute to Townes Van Zandt; Verlon Thompson's Christians and Outlaws; Pacetti's mystical originals. Valla sings a lead on Kate MacLeod's classic Lark in the Morning; and the two make a picker's feast of Wildwood Flower.

From St. Augustine, Florida, Sam Pacetti learned flamenco at the knee of his Cuban grandfather, studied classical guitar in his early teens, and became a protégé of Travis-style master Gamble Rogers. Tradition and innovation neatly balance in Sam Pacetti's music. There is a powerful raw emotionality evident as well - an earthy sensuality reminiscent of a red-dirt blues master.

Born into a musical family, Gabriel Valla was treated to a succession of musicians - John Hartford, Bernie Leadon, Gamble Rogers, Vassar Clements, Will McLean and many others - passing through the Valla household. At 16, Gabe won the guitar flat-picking competition at Merlefest, and traded licks onstage with Doc Watson.

Sam's 1997 Waterbug debut, Solitary Travel (also produced by Gabe Valla) garnered critical raves.

This review is from: Union (Audio CD)
If you liked Sam's first CD, you'll be even more impressed with this CD, which he did in collaboration with Gabe Valla. They are an excellent duo, both on guitar and voice. At times it's difficult to tell the two apart, as their voices are very similar. Sam is more controlled with his guitar work on this CD and exemplifies his real talent as a guitar player. My favorite songs are: Angeline and Dreamland, but the others are equally good.
