The Greatest Post-Hiatus PHiSH Show,
By D (Scarsdale, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Uniondale Ny 2/28/03 (Audio CD)
OK, ladies and gentlemen, here's the deal with this recording: when PHiSH discontinued their Live Phish CD Series of archival releases, they did so at the same time as they began offering soundboard recordings of every post-hiatus show they played, as they played them. They chose to release just THREE of these shows onto CD - the only live Phish CD's released since the discontinuation of the series. With a band like Phish, whose shows vary greatly each and every time, the choice of which shows to release is not one made lightly - THIS SHOW WAS PUT OUT ON CD INSTEAD OF OTHERS FOR A REASON!
This is truly Phish's best show post-hiatus - I was THERE! The first "Destiny Unbound" since 1991, "David Bowie" and "Harry Hood" in the same show, a first-set-yet-still-un-believable "Bathtub Gin" (heard the 7/29/98 version from the filler on Live Phish 17? This is on par with that...), and a 30 minute "Tweezer" of epic proportions (that NEVER degenerates to feedback or dissonance and is a perfect example of Phish's improvisational genious!) to open the second set that segues into the first "Soul Shakedown Party" (Bob Marley) in years! In addition to all of those epic jams, a few short-but-sweet songs were played as well, like "Sleep" and "Horn," and also the ever-rockin' "Birds of a Feather." The encore was beautifully played, as well: "Contact," "Mexican Cousin," "Tweezer Reprise." I've seen 14 shows, all post-hiatus, and this is the best I've ever heard! |
