Start with half a pill!, June 6, 2007
I have a problem with waking up in the middle of the night, but when I really need a good night's sleep, I take Unisom. I'd recommend starting off with half a pill and see how that works for you. If I take a whole pill, I spend the next day a bit woozy with cotton mouth. But half a pill helps me sleep through the night, and I have no ill effects the next day!

Pregnancy sickness relief, January 6, 2006
The sleep tablets (doxylamine) are also what I use, in combination with pyridoxine (vitamin B6) to manage pregnancy sickness (this is my tenth). The prescription form is only approved in Canada. It was taken off the market in the USA, I assume because of insurance/cover-your-butt/ect. Oh yeh, I sleep great with this. The sleep gels, as someone said before, are just the same thing as Benadryl. Doxylamine and Benadryl(diphenhydramine) are both antihistamines, the doxylamine is just a stronger one.

The best so far, December 26, 2005
There are two reasons why I need help getting into asleep. A major one is the fact that I tend to stay up late doing miscellaneous things, so the time at which I go to bed tends to get pushed into very early morning times, and that is not a good habit if you wish to spend a productive morning every working day. Another reason is that occasionally I must stay up all night over a few days for my work, and under the unusual working condition I need to force myself to sleep at the end of the "night" (i.e., at the dawn), so that I can keep working the next day. Not to mention jet lag, changing sleeping pattern quickly is not as easy for many people.
I have tried several sleeping aid available OTC, mostly diphenhydramine HCL-based drugs and melatonin. I found melatonin to do nothing for me as far as sleeping is concerned, and diphenhydramine worked fine in the beginning, but I seem to develop tolerance over an extended use --- it worked, but not as effectively as I continued using them. So I tried to use a sleeping aid with different ingredient. Unisom SleepTabs use doxylamine succinate, so that fit my bill. So far I find it to be the most effective, and the drug continues to be effective after a while for me.
In general, I found sleeping aids that I have tried, including SleepTabs, to be pretty safe and non-habit forming. However, these things are not necessarily magic, and while very effective in make you feel lethargic and ready for getting into sleep, they do not force you to sleep. While they make it easier to go into sleep, I find spending satisfying times and leaving no anxiety at the end of the day still is the best way to help me get to sleep, with or without sleeping aid.
