We Do It Together...In Unison,
This review is from: Unison (Audio CD)
This album seems to be very overlooked by many people, even Celine Dion. In my opinion, she couldn't have had a better start in her English-language career.
"If There Was Any Other Way" although not one of her better ones, is quite a good start, and not the kind of song we tend to hear from her. "If Love Is Out of the Question" is quite misheard, but an excellent song and one of my bigger favorites. It even has a slight country feel. "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" is an excellent mainstream ballad and her first top five hit in the states. "The Last to Know" is a very nice, sweet ballad that really shows off her voice and should have been a major hit. "I'm Loving Every Moment With You" is an excellent, drippy, soothing, romantic song that will greatly please listeners and could have been a major hit single. "Love By Another Name" lacks a real point, yet is the sort of euphoric pop song that can sweep listeners away. It invokes a flighty feeling, especially with the background vocals that sound like they're being sung by extraterrestrails: "It's still the same old love, Love By Another Name". "Unison," though the title song, is one of the least interesting. It has a sound like a dog sweating (when their tongues come out of their mouths). The next song is "I Feel Too Much," a left-field highlight from this album. It is a song like no other Dion has done, and another one that few recognize. This song fuses rock, dance and techno in a way that it makes you want to leap up and dance. Download Napster and download this song as soon as you're done reading this; this is the best song on the album! "If We Could Start Over," which should be called "If We Could Start Over Again," is a wonderful, true-to-life song that is very beautiful. It really provides a showcase for Dion's voice - the beauties of its extreme highs and lows that show her range. The same goes for "Have a Heart," the final song in this great album, and the best one to end it with. Though quite similar to the song that comes right before it, this song is very beautiful and also true-to-life, and it ends in a way to make you yearn to hear more from Dion - which should be the point of a debut album. Although I was only three when this album was recorded, I can remember some songs from it from the radio. How could I remember them if this album wasn't good?

Celine Dion's debut which catapulted her on the way to superstardom is a great debut, featuring her beautiful voice on mostly upbeat romantic songs. Five tracks on this album stand out from the others, especially the catchy title cut, Celine's first big hit "Where Does My Heart Beat Now", two Paul Bliss (of Moody Blues fame these days) songs in "(If There Was) Any Other Way" and "If Love Is Out of Question", and the sultry "The Last To Know". The rest of tracks are so-so, and I often skipped over these on my CD player. This album isn't for everyone, but Celine's most devoted fans can't help but go ga-ga over this stunning debut album.

A stunning, yet underrated debut album.,

This is th album which launched Celine Dion onto the English speaking market. Though sadly under promoted I had to buy this album the first time I heard 'Where Does My Heart Beat Now'. Her vocals sound incredibly polished given she was only 20, yet she sings with true emotion & understanding. Stand out tracks on this album for me are 'Unison', 'Where does my heart beat now' and the devastating 'I Feel Too Much'. If you only know Celine for her balads, then 'I Feel Too Much' will shock you as it takes Celine into the rock arena. If these 3 tracks had been heavily promoted at the time then I am sure we'd have heard far more upbeat numbers from her. The production is excellent, the better your audio system, the better this album gets. A must have for anyone who enjoys female vocals.

A melodic collection of songs,
This review is from: Unison (Audio CD)
Unison, Celine Dion's debut American English language album, was released in 1990. There are ten tracks. The songwriting is good, the musicianship is tight, and the sound quality is polished. The material is in a pop musical direction. Dion does a solid job with the vocals--they're smooth and attractive. There's more keyboard than guitar work throughout. Examples of songs that I enjoy are "Where Does My Heart Beat Now," "The Last to Know," "I Feel Too Much," and "If We Could Start Over." The pretty ballad "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" supplies industrious, soaring singing from Dion. The nicely tailored, charming ballad "The Last to Know" furnishes ethereal keyboard playing. "I Feel Too Much" is engaging and lively, while the well-crafted, tuneful ballad "If We Could Start Over" provides diligent vocals from Dion. The CD booklet contains the lyrics, and the back of the CD jewel case displays a color photo of Dion. The CD is just over 43 minutes. Unison is a catchy disc.

The missing link!,

Well, when Celine released her greatest hits album "All The Way" recently I was surprised that none of the tracks from "Unison" were one it. It's as if this album (her first English album) was totally ignored. Not to mention this is the album that blasted her onto the US music scene! I found this strange because this album contains some of her best up tempo tunes, not to mention the awesome ballad "Where Does My Heart Beat Now". If you never knew that this cd existed, you are missing out! Some of the best tracks are -- Where Does My Heart Beat Now, If Love Is Out The Question, The Last To Know, If There Was Any Other Way, If We Could Start Over and Have A Heart. Unison rates among her best work! A MUST HAVE!

Not a fan of her recent work? Try this!,

Imagine this; at the time this album came out I was living in The Netherlands and Dion was little or not known yet, so it was in a CD shop catering mostly to alternative music (!) where I discovered this album. All you really need to know is that I do not listen to or buy much of her recent work, but this one is still in my CD player regularly! Try it, you will probably not be disappointed!

Céline Dion is just totally miraculous,

This was her first English recording and her song, "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" ended up on the charts. How cool is that. She was a little over 20 when this album was recorded. She did a fantastic job with all the songs, 1-10. My favourites are "Where Does My Heart Beat Now" and "Have a Heart." To sum up the whole album. FLAWLESS. Céline just takes any song to the extremes with her incredible 5 octave voice.

A Solid Effort For An Early Artist,
By Cole M "Cole M" (Indiana) - See all my reviews

Few music listeners, with the exception of industry insiders, could have predicted the amazing rise of Celine Dion. The powerful, magnificient voice was always there, but the exceptional songs and artist packaging came later.
Unison is the first step in Dion's English language career. With over 10 French Albums and having the accomplishment of being the most succesful Canadian artist in history, Celine launched her voice to a worldwide audience. Unison is a mix of early 90's soft rock and contemporary ballads. "Where Does My Heartbeat Now" stands out as one of the recordings strongest selections. The song is very well written and does an excellent job of showcasing Dion's voice. "If There Was Any Other Way" show's Celine's edgy side while "Have a Heart" is a true Dion Ballad through and through. Although Unison is not at the level of Dion's subsequent work, the listener hears a voice that is not as trained and calculated as the one we hear today. For this reason it makes Unison an interesting listen. |
