I purchased this to, at long last, rid myself of dialup. I cannot go into what a long process the decision was (we actually had charts with this device featured as well as Verizon and Virgin Mobile, and all sorts of information on the features of each device). But we wanted to be certain that this would be the best choice.

We wanted a no-contract mobile hotspot, and this ATT Unite filled all of our requirements including great 4G LTE coverage at all 3 locations where we will use it.

Setting up was easy, and being very tech-phobic, I was grateful of this. After the device was activated (the customer service rep who helped me was great), all I had to do was get on my Dell laptop (Win8) and Kindle and sign in. Almost too easy.

I bought a card and added $50 for 5G, which should be more than enough for a month since we do not view videos or download music or do any gaming.

Depressing the "on" button on the device for 3 seconds turns on the device, and it takes about 30 seconds to bring up the start screen. Here you can access any mail messages and settings. Despite some of the reviews that say otherwise, there is not a meter on the screen which shows your data usage and days remaining on your plan. I have determined that this is only available on the "contract" device. But I bookmarked the website address shown on the device and can easily check data usage there on my laptop.

After 2 days, this device has been a pleasure to use. I will update if my opinion changes.

Edited to say that five months later, I have no regrets about purchasing this. I do keep an eye on how much data I use, and would love to stream music (maybe in the future this will happen), but at this time the hotspot is perfect for our needs.

I cannot say anything bad about this device, and the service provided by att. I was thinking since this is a prepaid service it was going to be useless, oh god, how wrong I was. It is reliable, super fast and great price. I don't need to be at Starbucks anymore using their connection.

I have this hotspot, but I added mine to my ATT monthly account. The device works spot on perfectly. I was piggybacking on a friends internet when we commuted but her's was unreliable and kept going out. Now we both use this one and it works throughout the entire three hour train ride, even in the tunnels and over the mountain where her's used to go out. I like the easy interface and the battery stays charged a long time.

This is a solid hotspot with long battery life and a strong signal. No complaints on the hardware. I use it on a prepaid account. It's hard to live with a 5 GB cap. Especially if you do a lot of streaming. I wish AT&T had more variety on their prepaid hotspot plans like T-mobile. But it's a stable network with great coverage. This is a handy item.

Let me know if this math is right: $50 per 5GB. $10 per 1GB. $1.00 per 100MB. 10˘ per 10MB. 1˘ per 1MB. Did I miss one? 1 penny per 1,000 KB, right? Sometimes, this thing just drains data from my account, for no apparent reason. I have (finally) configured my computer to not automatically download anything. I connected my UNITE this morning and within a few minutes, AT&T drained over 300MB from my data while checking emails (without attachments or pictures). That's $3.00 for what seemed like nothing. It really seems like they're just stealing from me sometimes, and I don't see any justifiable data usage to back it up.

First I tried a T-Mobile MiFi hotspot, and the lady on the phone who activated it was a rude "See You Next Tuesday" so I returned it to Best Buy, after using a whole bunch of data and got all my money back. The lady who did the return was also rude, so I decided to give my money to Amazon and AT&T instead. Much less expensive here (at the time of my purchase), and much better customer services. Anyway . . .

The T-Mobile kept kicking me off-line, it was really annoying. It was also slow. This AT&T UNITE is a completely different beast. It's fast, fast enough, but the data is expensive and limited. I had to change all my settings to stop any automatic downloads of PodCasts and software. I'm learning to be frugal with my data usage, and it's not all that bad. No more watching video online, and I blocked all ads and flash, but once I got everything configured to use less data, things are great!

Calling AT&T to activate this was so quick and easy and friendly, compared to the run-around and annoyances from T-Mobile.

Great with speed, but because of the speed it uses a lot of data really fast! I am in an area where this is my last resort on getting internet so it is worth it!

Outstanding Product. I bought this after frustration with Virgin Mobile, who claimed their hotspot would work in my area but it didn't. I wasted a lot of money on that. Once I switched to AT&T Unite, it was easy to set up, and brought immediate, fast and strong internet access in a remote area. Yes, the data plans are somewhat expensive, but you can buy data for a limited time without automatic renewal or contract. So quite worth it in the long run, especially if you occasionally find yourself in areas without free wireless (remote areas, hotels, vacation houses, etc.). If this doesn't work where you're at, it's unlikely anything well. Very happy I found it!
