Book Description

May 10, 1988
Wonderful huge oversize (9 1/2 x 12 3/4) volume. United Artists is alone among film studios in that it was founded, not by buisness tycoons, but by four of the most famous artists in motion pictures--Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Charles Chaplin, and master director D. W. Griffith. The company was idealistically set up in 1919 to act as a distribution agency to give independent producers freedom of expression away from the restraints of the major studios. United Artists boasts the three biggest money making spinning series in cinema history----James Bond, The Pink Panther, and Rocky movies. Hundreds of photos on all the movies released since the publication date of this text. About 398 pages on heavy glossy paper.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The latest of Crown's histories of the major Hollywood studios. Following the standard format for the series, each film released by the studio (1581 from United Artists) receives some kind of coverage, usually a brief paragraph giving major credits, a synopsis, and a bit of criticism, along with a still from the picture. Lamentably, some films are listed only in truncated form, without a photo, as in other recent series titles. However, such listings are not numerous and are used only for releases after 1950. Bergan's critical taste often puts him in the minority, and he has let an error or two slip through, but the book is still worthwhile and a necessity for special collections. John Smothers, Monmouth Cty. Lib., Freehold, N.J.
