Product Description

Gandalf is an old, but powerful wizard who was an important influence at the Council of Elrond, since he knew the power The One Ring possessed and the evil the Dark Lord Sauron could do if he recovered it. He joined Frodo and the other selected members of the Fellowship as they crossed Middle-earth in their quest to destroy the Ring. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf the Grey carried an old wooden staff, which also housed his pipe, but it was lost when he was captured by Saruman in Isengard. After Gandalf's escape he possessed a new staff but it too was lost when he was slain in Khazad-dum while doing battle with the Balrog. In The Two Towers, Gandalf was sent back to Middle-earth as Gandalf the White. To complete his task he was given a new white staff to aid in the battle to defeat Sauron. The staff was adorned with an intricate and delicately styled crown that held a great power. Gandalf released King Theoden from Saruman's influence with the aid of this magical staff. Next to his trusty sword Glamdring the white staff was Gandalf's chief weapon. This authentically detailed replica is a reproduction of the actual filming prop built by Weta Workshop of New Zealand and used in the motion picture triology, The Lord of The Rings. United Cutlery, industry leader in fine movie reproductions, has meticulously recreated the prop using only the finest grade materials and craftsmanship. Close attention to detail was a top priority. It is presented with a wall display and includes a certificate of authenticity.

Okay, from a purely asthetic perspective, this staff is awesome. It's elegant, simple, yet complicated, not to mention creative and evocative. It actually looks like a magician might carry it without sneering inwardly at himself. Also, the balance is quite easy to find, about 1/4 (mebbe more) from the top. So, excellent!

The actual implementation of the staff, though, is irritating. Shipping over the web may not be the best choice... when the item arrived, despite careful packaging, several paint chips had come off around the haft. There seems to be some sort of red paint underneath. The haft itself, is also a little loose, enough to be noticable, but not enough to repair without a lot of trouble- ie taking the whole thing off, and reattaching. My final quibble, is that the staff part itself (wood) is low quality, appearing in feel to be, in fact, a broomstick, although maybe even lighter. While this offsets the heavy metal top... i dunno, it won't exactly hold together if you intend to swing it at another staff.

So, brilliant design... somewhat flawed execution.

I was so excited to be receiving the staff to go along with my HOBBIT Gandalf staff. When delivered I noticed how small the package was. To my horror I saw what I got for $88.90. The material looks cheap like plastic. The description says the material is hand-painted solid wood where there is no evidence of paint or wood. The staff is made up of two pieces to connect together. I read the reviews online and there description of how fantastic this product is doesn't match up with what I received. The only accurate description was the weight of the product and the iron wall display. And I did not see the official licensed United Cutlery copyright mark on the staff. So bottom line I will be returning the staff. The seller needs to give a better description of the staff.

I have a funny story to recount about these staffs. I needed 3 for a theatrical production. I ordered 2 from United Cutlery and 1 used one from e-bay to save a little money. United Cutlery's description says the staff shaft is made from wood and the head is made of metal. However, the heads of the 2 I ordered are made from some kind of resin, not metal. This was actually better for me because it makes the entire staff much lighter and more evenly balanced, so I have no complaints. The wood shaft screws together like a pool cue. It's not a hard wood, but it is not a composite.

I can only assume the manufacturer used to make these out of metal and then switched to resin because other reviewers mention the metal heads being a little top heavy. This is where it gets funny. The description of the same staff I bought on e-bay claimed the staff was made of resin and wood, but when it arrived it was metal and wood! It weighed about 9 lbs and was so top heavy that it was difficult to use and eventually fell over backstage one day and broke into 3 pieces. The metal head is made in 3 pieces and is glued onto the shaft, so it broke along all the glue lines. Actually, just bumping it made the glue chip so you could always see gaps/lines between the 3 pieces. This is not the case with the resin heads. In my opinion (and experience), the resin heads are much nicer looking, more user friendly and more durable than the metal heads.

As the metal one broke, I am now ordering a replacement from United Cutlery. This is when I noticed their description says the head is metal. I hope not! I hope it's resin like the previous ones.

So my only complaint/request is, sellers please update your product descriptions and make sure they are accurate so us buyers know exactly what we are getting!!!

Well, upon reading a lot of the reviews I had some worries about the quality of the product. But when I opened the package, they quickly faded away. The staff was shipped in two pieces, professionally triple-boxed. The inner most box had a very professional sleeve, and inside came the wall-mount, certificate of authenticity, etc. There were no paint-chips as stated before, and it's more of an off-white, but I never expected it to be a pure white color.
Only downside is that the description says wood and metal, where it is actually particle board and plastic-coated wire. So if you're looking for something more than to carry around at a convention or hanging on your wall, I wouldn't suggest it. But if that's how they made the props, then you can't really complain.
Overall, it's a great buy! It's full-sized and it will make as a great gift!

UC has an absolutely phenomenal record, but even I am hard pressed to give this item a grade beyond 1 star. Simply stated, I would not be doing the good name of J.R,R. Tolkien justice to display this one item. Understand I speak for this item alone, every other purchase I have ever made (all blades) has been 5 star. I will pursue this matter as far as I can and then I may have to cut bait and run. Heads up on this purchase folks.

I have purchased several United Cutlery LOTR items but this is the only one that didn't live up to my expectations. The staff was not made of metal but I understand that they changed after the initial run. However, the staff arrived completely shattered at the headpiece when the box was opened. Also missing any certificate of authentication and no wall mount as advertised (and provided by United Cutlery).
