Extraordinary in its detail, this year-by-year account chronicles the tenure of Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim as he struggled to lead the United Nations through the veritable diplomatic minefield of the Vietnam conflict. Includes a narrative overview which highlights Waldheim's strengths while making clear why his unprecedented bid for a third term at the UN's helm ended in failure.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The first half of Ryan's (history, Bronx Community College, CUNY) text examines the challenges faced by Waldheim during his first term as Secretary-General of the United Nations, from 1971-1981….Ryan chronicles the difficulties of operating in the shadow of U.S. Secretary of State Kissinger, Waldheim's achievements as a world leader, and the UN's quest for peace during his second term, and the intensification of the Cold War and weakening of the UN in the final years of his tenure. The second half of the text is devoted to a very detailed chronology of events for each of the ten years of Waldheim's tenure. (Reference & Research Book News )
