African Americans have contributd tremendously to the formation of the United States. This book is excellent documentation of African-American contributions to the Union Army and development of Chattanooga, Tenn. It is an essential historical account of the recruitment and deployment of U.S. Colored Troops in the Appalachian areas of Tenn. and Ga. It provides an overview of enslavement and racism before the Civil War, a historical account of federal resistance to the use of colored troops, information about the battles the troops fought, the troops training, a source of the colored volunteers' songs, etc. It is an excellent reference source for historians and teachers.

Also, it contanis more then 3,000 names of once enslaved US colored troop; therefore, it is an excellent genealogy source. This is an excellent source of first time researched material

About the Author

With a degree in anthropology, Raymond Evans has spent more then forty years conducting archaeological and ethno-historical reasearch on a variety of topics. With a lifelong interest in the Spanish Colonial period, he has conducted investigations in Tenn, S.C., southern California, Texas, and Mexico on early Spanish sites from this time period. He spent several years as a consultant to the Museum of the Cherokee Indian in Cherokee, North Carolina and is the co-founder of the Journal of Cherokee Studies. While spending ten years as the staff archaeologist for Hensley-Schmidt Engineers, he dealt with the full range of cultural resources in the Chattanoog area.

He has completed research contracts with the National Park Service, The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, various state and local governments and numerous private clients. In rescent years, he has completed inventories and assessments of Civil War related sites in Dade and Walker Counties, Ga. During the course of his career, Evans has published more then fifty books and articles dealing with archaeological and historical research.
