It is an essential historical account of the recruitment and deployment of U.S. Colored Troops in the Appalachian areas of Tenn. and Ga. It provides an overview of enslavement and racism before the Civil War, a historical account of federal resistance to the use of colored troops, information about the battles the troops fought, the troops training, a source of the colored volunteers' songs, etc. It is an excellent reference source for historians and teachers.
Also, it contanis more then 3,000 names of once enslaved US colored troop; therefore, it is an excellent genealogy source. This is an excellent source of first time researched material
