About the Author

John De La Garza, was Estevan Rogelio Garcia's grandfather by blood. An alcoholic, a share cropper by virtue of his twelve children who worked the farm to produce fields. He supported his family and his personal vices on their wages. On September 10, 1952, Caroline De La Garza gave birth to a son who's name or face she would not know for forty years. Sold by his grandfather, as an infant he was worth the price of a gas tank, and a twelve dollar beer tabIn 1952, Estevan was left behind in the little South Texas cotton farming town of Bryan, Texas. There has never existed a record of adoption, he became the child of Jose and Maria Garcia. Witnessing the atrocities against people of color during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960's and against prisoners in the South during the 1970's, Garcia took on a cause which he hoped one day would reveal the injustices imposed upon human lives by those who thought they were above the law. In 1983, Garcia became the first inmate in the State of Texas ever allowed by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals to represent another inmate in a murder post conviction evidentiary hearing, overturned by Garcia himself. By 1985 he was first in the State of Texas to have founded a legal aid organization for inmates within the Texas Department of Corrections, known as the Texas Writ Writer's Association. The organization's objectives were to curb frivolous litigation submitted by prison inmates, exhausting perhaps the only possibility of ever having their legal claims heard by the courts. Through Garcia's organization, inmates would assist each other with legal research and could have paralegals and attorneys review their petitions prior to filing, saving tax payers millions in the cost of processing frivolous litiga
