The designation index which forms a unique feature of the book has been brought fully up to date. Bringing this volume into line with its companion work by the same authors, US Navy Aircraft since 1911, a new Appendix has been added to describe and illustrate the balloons and airships used by the U S Army and U S Air Forces. The first airship became operational with the Army in 1908, whereas the first heavier than air machine was not accepted until 1909
