5.0 out of 5 stars Contrasts submarine history with today's modern vessels, August 8, 2002
This review is from: United States Submarines (Hardcover)
This is an outstanding, lavish history of the U.S. submarine: if only one submarine history were to be chosen as a comprehensive library reference, it should be this. A team of historians, authors and Naval experts contribute to this title, which holds over 300 pages of text and photos. Black and white and color photos embellish essays that contrast submarine history with today's modern vessels, providing a unique and lavish display. Suitable for special gifts, United States Submarines is a recommended pick for any interested in military history in general or submarine development in particular.

5.0 out of 5 stars The biggest book on Subs ever, May 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: United States Submarines (Hardcover)
This must be the definitive volume on US Submarines! The book is huge and heavy and covers 100 years of American boats, from the Holland to the Virginia class. There are hundreds of photos and illustrations, many I have never seen before. The many sections cover every aspect of submarine history and technology and are authored by experts and reknown submarine officers. I enjoyed seeing the part about the many submarine memorials and museums, especially Texas' own Cavalla in nearby Galveston.

There has never been such a showpiece book on submarines such as this one. It will be the centerpiece in any collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great reference. The one sub book to buy., June 21, 2003

This review is from: United States Submarines (Hardcover)
I spent 6 years on a ballistic missile submarine and I have a great interest in the history and current developments of the Silent Service. If you are a veteran submariner, you will like the way the book is put together. It has great photos and it is truly a beautifully made book that you can pass along to a son or grandson to share the pride us "bubbleheads" all share.

If you aren't a submariner but you aspire to be one or if you simply want to learn about the world of subs, then this is also the book for you. It is a huge volume that will occupy hours of your time. I would recommend this book over any of the lesser, albeit cheaper, more poorly made books on the subject.

If you find the price a little steep, you may also want to consider "Silent Chase: Submarines of the U.S. Navy". It is smaller but still a well made book. (ISBN 0-934738-38-6)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pride Runs Deep !, November 14, 2008
This review is from: United States Submarines (Hardcover)

I can't figure out what happened to the other Reviews on this book. When I looked at this book about a week ago, there was an overall rating of 5* with 6 Reviews. They seem to have disappeared---maybee in keeping with the subject ,they submerged.Anyway;I just completed reading this magificent book and have no problem in recommending it as an excellent resource for anyone interested in the United States Navy's history in Submarine Warfare.
It is a huge, excellently constructed and printed book of 352 pages, written by extremely knowledgeable and involved people who gave their lives and made their marks in Submarines having such an important role in the defense of America and the Free World.
It is loaded with what must be close to 1000 photographs paintings and illustrations in both B&W and color. There are even some which are full and double page. The text is supurb and every photo is well explained. The book does an excellent job of detailing the submarines themselves, how they developed from the berginning ,through all the conflicts of the past 100 years and the battles they took part in;as well as a look to what the future well bring.
But even more than that ,it pays great homage to the courageous men who sailed in them, many who made supreme sacrifices and the acts of heroism they performed and the well deserved Honors and Medals that were bestowed upon them by a grateful nation.
"Pride runs deep! These three words speak volumes about those who form the heart and soul of the Submarine Force-the submariners. From its very beginnings in October 1900,the U.S. Navy Submarine Force has been blessed with extraordinary people--people who have voluntarily given of themselves in service to their country and who have demonstrated to their shipmates that they can be counted on in ny emergency and in the face of any enemy."
Great as the strength of the equipment and men may be ;its true value lies in the conviction of the enemy that the adversary has the political will to use it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Proud History, April 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: United States Submarines (Hardcover)
As a member of a submarine veterans group, I can attest to the accuracy of this book. When it was first presented at one of our monthly meetings, it became an instant hit. Every member was wanting a copy. Several were located at various locations and were offered for raffle as fund raisers.
I cannot believe that there is a submariner out there that would not recommend this book or jump at the chance to own one.
The book itself is finely bound with cushioned hard covers and embellished with a seal on the front, as illustrated. The photgraphs are outstanding, and the narratives are well written.
If you are, or were, a "bubblehead", then this is a must have book. The same goes for those of you who are just interested in the history of our submarine service. "Pride Runs Deep", indeed.
