Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-10-A good choice for students needing background material on women in the military or women's rights. The book begins with a brief history of Virginia Military Institute, its policies about admitting women, and an overview of a cadet's life. The bulk of the text focuses on the legal battle that ensued when the U.S. government sued VMI over its admissions policy and the impact of the Supreme Court's decision, including the subsequent treatment of women. The well-documented, clearly presented information includes numerous quotes and excerpts of court opinion. However, the writing is at times a bit dry. Black-and-white photos, primarily of the individuals involved in the case, illustrate the volume. Useful for reports.
