As a guitar player forever, I've got everything Paul has put out (going back 25 years ago). Each one is entertaining and demonstrates his phenomenal playing ability. This one doesn't disappoint and it has vocals to boot. I have 100's of CD's and there are only a few I play on a regular basis. This is working it's way to one of those. Freddie Nelson is reminiscent of Freddy Mercury in both the sense of being a great singer, and, being a power singer. And Paul Gilbert compliments each song with fresh and inventive licks. The emphasis on this CD is the SONGS and not the individual talents (which definitely these guys are) but there's enough showcasing to hear how good these guys are. If someone asked me, I'd say buy it.

Paul's best work since Mr. Big!,

Paul Gilbert and Freddie Nelson are a perfect match, their styles complement each other greatly. This CD is the best thing Paul has done since Mr. Big. It's straight up rock with not a weak song in the mix. It's good to hear a band with a singer that can actually sing. I can't recommend this CD enough!
Bringing Freddie in was a stroke of genius on Paul's part. A lot of people are going to be wondering where Freddie Nelson came from. Being a resident of the Pittsburgh area, I have been a fan of his for years. Those who are able to get copies of his earlier works with Triple X (Guitar) and Too Tall Jones (Guitar and Vocals)should do so. They will not be disappointed.

Exceptionally Outstanding Rock 'n' Roll !!!,

Freddie Nelson is an exceptional singer & living "medium" of the departed Freddie Mercury's voice 'n' style of singing... Paul Gilbert is an outstanding rock/'metal guitarist from Mr Big who has discovered Nelson & created a great band w/ Nelson... this phenomenal CD, "United States", clearly rocks hard w/ clever compositions that are deceptively simple songs with tremendous popular appeal... if you didn't know better, you'd swear that this was the new Queen recording as the spirit of Freddie Mercury permeates Nelson's singing & Gilbert's playing shows a reverence for the music of Queen & other "vintage" British rock bands = this CD ROCKS hard yet shows a play-fullness that is sure to create massive popular appeal for this recording ! all i can add in this review is that this is my favorite rock 'n' roll CD of 2009, so far, & anyone who enjoys Queen will be amazed how much Nelson evokes the spirit of Freddie Mercury without being a mere clone & how much shred master Gilbert learned from his tenure w/ Mr. Big about adapting his chops to embellish & enhance these well-crafted songs without compromising the intensity or complexity of his style's virtuoso shredding... highly recommended !!!

What to say...if Freddie Mercury and Queen were still rocking they would probably sound like this great CD. While I have 95% of the music Paul Gilbert ever published I did not know Freddy Nelson but I am sure glad I did buy the disc. This is a delightful collection of rock/hard rock with a strong 80s personality. The singer really reminds of the great Freddie and Gilbert's guitar is, as always, astonishing. In particular track n.6 The Answer could have been lifted from The Game for what I know. Track n.7 is to me the highlight of the disc - I can't really explain it, the kind of song that packs enough emotion and sentiment to drain your strength- think Journey's Trial by Fire from the eponimous album...or think U2's Heartland....masterful stuff indeed. In these times when people spend money buying reissues of pearl jam and other noise peddlers it is great to have new music like this.

Wow! Freddie Nelson is amazing. Where did they find this guy?? This is my fav release from PG. Paul continues to amaze as always with his killer sound and fretboard mastery. "Waste of Time" could be huge if radio ever picked it up. Nelson does sound like Freddy Mercury, but with his own style. Buy this now, you will not be disappointed.

OK, I'll admit up front I'm a huge Gilbert fan. But even with that caveat, this is a great album! It has the best qualities of Paul's other work - killer guitar, great hooks/melody, etc. - all with the bonus of Freddie's great voice. This was the biggest surprise album of 2009 for me, had no clue it would be this good.
