This review is from: United We Stand: Commonsense Solutions to the Issues That Divide Us (Paperback)
I wrote this book for people who are tired of hate politics and are looking for ways to move America forward. It examines explosive social issues such as abortion, gay marriage and sex education from various angles, using research to uncover misinformation and misconceptions while providing commonsense solutions that can help us realize our potential and help turn our country around.

Essays worth reading, June 7, 2006
This review is from: United We Stand: Commonsense Solutions to the Issues That Divide Us (Paperback)
What impressed me most about this book was that despite the very controversial nature of the topics covered, the author managed to present the issues in a factual and reasoned tone. As the title says, this truly is a commonsense look at some very divisive issues. Even if you're unable to set aside your own preconceptions about the topics (abortion, sex education, same-sex marriage, gun-control and more), when you're done with the book I think you'll be hard-pressed to disagree with the conclusions the author has come to. His tone and approach are very accessible. Each topic is looked at from every angle and reduced down to its basic components. Then, using commonsense and factual information (not just emotional, knee-jerk reactions), a viable solution is offered - or at least a plan of attack to reach a solution. I'm not a big essay reader, but I really enjoyed this book and I would definitely recommend it. It is a fast read, and it's really refreshing to see these topics addressed with a rational approach and factual arguments.

Balanced and Insightful, May 30, 2006

When I hear hate politics in action, I usually just turn the dial in disgust. I commend Mr. Cummings for going a step further and trying to make a difference. Admittedly, I was defensive as I went through each section of the book, anticipating what beliefs I thought the author would try to impose on me while attacking my own. I guess that is part of the conditioning the current media has instilled in me -- that there is no common ground. Instead, I found the book to provide fair, balanced information for both sides of the issues. This was a good, quick read and was well worth my time. The only topic I thought should have been included but was not was immigration, although this may not have been quite the hot topic that it is now when the author was writing this book.
