Book Description

October 8, 2006

Mother, wife, warrior, witch—the divine feminine figure has multiple voices and forms. Each goddess represents an aspect of woman, nature, and the Divine. Use this exquisite deck to seek out the wisdom of Goddesses from mythologies around the world.

Publisher Review:

The Universal Goddess Tarot manages to succeed, both conceptually and artistically, where other goddess Tarots and oracles fail. First, rather than a random collection of goddesses, it illustrates each arcana with a goddess that expresses the traditional meanings of the cards. Second, it presents the goddesses as complex, real, and, in a way, human. Third, the art manages to express the unique character and culture of each goddess yet the deck as a whole feels unified. Finally, the Little White Booklet captures in very few words the voice of the goddess and the meaning of the card; in addition, it includes a spread that is useful both on a divinatory and spiritual level.

Most people agree that Tarot cards have more than one meaning. And most people...read more.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice change from masculine centric tarot decks, September 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Universal Goddess Tarot (English and Spanish Edition) (Cards)
I am very impressed with Universal Goddess Tarot from lo Scarabeo. All the cards feature female deities from various cultures all over the world. They are placed on the card that most closely represents their story, powers, deeds, personality. The cards are very detailed with symbols of both the tarot and of the goddesses.

The LWB has a meaningful explanation of the goddess or goddesses on the card and how they relate to the tarot. The LWB covers 5 languages. Many of the cards made me curious to learn more about lore or I was unable to figure out how to pronounce their name. Wikipedia has entries for every one I looked for. The story behind the goddess on "the Wheel of Fortune" is absolutely outrageous and should be made into a movie.

The deck comes with a Temple reading that is appropriate for the themed deck. I love the artwork on this deck! The goddesses are playful and honest in their depiction of feminine beauty. Not all the women are busty or scantly clad. I am in love with the athletic blond on the nine of cups. The dangerous queen of swords has detail and depth that adds to the meaning of the card.

I think this deck was well researched and expertly designed. I am inspired when I use this deck and feel connected to the female spirit. If you read tarot and want to have one deck that celebrates all things female, this deck will impress you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Joyful and interesting, but missing info, January 9, 2011

I loved this tarot, its just that i have reservations. On the one hand in my own spiritual life I take images and make them my own and I have pretty extensive knowledge about myths so I can sort through the bad and good. From my experience I've learned you must be careful though that some Goddess imagery and promotion is selling predatory images as being divine and don't tell the very negative aspects of the images they portray. Predators are never divine - they are the opposite of being divine.

Egyptian mythology, Greco-Roman, and others all have negative images - resurrecting cruel practices is real - not a story like on TV, real people have been hurt sometimes so badly you wouldn't be able to endure it were you to see it. Never buy this stuff as excitement. However, with care and knowledge myths can teach emotional and moral truths. You must know about the language of symbols and have a background in mythological study to sort through some of it though. Many religious myths are dangerous and mind control cruelty traps. In the wake of Jonestown and other horrors of the past which we must learn from I'm always careful about myth as selling cruelty.Groups of very evil people are using religious imagery as propaganda and political tools - sometimes to take away the freedom and love you're seeking in Goddess religions. Read my other reviews!

On the other hand you can learn from myths if you're in the know. I loved this deck because there are images from Goddesses around the world. I love the African Oya card, there's a Maat (Egyptian) Athena (Greco/Roman) Lakshmi (Hindu) and others, with animals and other symbols that are quite enjoyable and meaningful. The booklet that came with my book is small and limited, if I didn't know about the Goddesses already, I would've been a little lost. Perhaps the deluxe version comes with a better book. The irony is, that many of the books are not actually in the know about the real practices and the negative aspects of cards etc... For instance, Maat is part of a pantheon that has predatory practices etc... will add to this review in future, for now don't have time. For now, I will say that I enjoyed the brightness and light to the cards, some of them were a bit to Barbie for my taste, but they somehow worked for me in representing the different G's. The Oya card was my fave.

Excellent tarot deck with beautiful Goddess pictures and detailed and informative description of each Goddess in the accompanying pamphlet. Featured Goddesses range from the most well-known to the obscure which I found most enlightening. One of the most meaningful tarot decks I own.
