Product Description

Editorial Review
In the tradition of great 3-D action jumping games, Crash Bandicoot is probably the PlayStation equivalent of the groundbreaking Nintendo 64 title Super Mario 64. Now repackaged as one of PlayStation's Greatest Hits, this top-selling game takes you away on a tropical island adventure that is filled with precarious enemies and challenging levels. Our spiky-haired hero Crash needs no weapons to survive the harsh jungle. Instead, he jumps, jogs, and spins his way through numerous lush and downright fun environments.

With 26 levels spanned across three tropical islands, Crash Bandicoot is sure to amuse old gamers as well as new. Crash must rescue his girlfriend, Tawna, from the evil clutches of Dr. Cortex. Along the way, he can gather fruit for extra lives, smash boxes for random prizes, and gather tokens that can be used for bonus rounds. Numerous big bosses block your path, which also includes more than a few risky jumps that require split-second timing. Crash Bandicoot's impressive graphics and strong gameplay have already won over many hard-core and casual gamers. While this PlayStation classic has already spawned two successful sequels, the original version remains a worthy purchase--particularly at the sub-$20 price. --Kasty Thomas

GameSpot Review
For months, Sony insisted that Crash Bandicoot was NOT their new mascot. For months, Naughty Dog Software insisted that Crash Bandicoot isn't Sony's answer to Super Mario 64. For months they went so far as to say that the games are completely different and shouldn't be compared. But the comparison is irresistible. Crash may not offer the graphical smoothness or versatility of Mario's vast new world, but its brilliantly colorful and complex jungle environments boast true diversity of shape and texture - kind of a tiki room Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Look beyond the pretty pixels, however, and Crash weighs in at only slightly above average.

The graphics may be 3-D, but gameplay is flat as roadkill on a four-lane highway. Forget about plot: in most levels, Crash simply marches along a linear path, spinning into enemies and smashing crates filled with fruits. Collect 100 pieces of fruit and you get an extra life - a "tribute" to Mario? Several levels are side-view jump-fests, as seen on 16-bit machines dozens of times before. Rumor has it that the game's most interesting feature - hidden gems that are revealed by executing levels flawlessly - was added only at the behest of a Sony producer, not the Naughty Dog team. Naughty Dog also claims that Crash was originally a nonlinear game, but found that restricting gameplay to a tight path made it more exciting. (The pace of Crash IS more exciting than Super Mario 64 most of the time, simply because the action comes nonstop.)

Players may enjoy Crash Bandicoot purely as a test of jumping abilities. And make no mistake: jumping is key. Crash executes every type of jump ever seen in a platform game: short jumps, long jumps, short AND long jumps, quick jumps, jumps onto icy ledges, jumps onto tiny ledges, and so on. Players looking for an old-school platform game with uncanny visual effects will certainly find it here. However, for players who want a true nonlinear 3-D run-and-jump game, snag Sony's highly underrated (and now budget-priced) Jumping Flash! or Eidos Interactive's Tomb Raider. -- Zach Meston

4.0 out of 5 stars Sony has an excellent response to Sonic the Hedgehog, October 13, 1999

Durability:3.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars
Because it is a CD based unit a lot of the games on the Sony Playstation have a tendancy to be slow in their game play, especally while they boot up into the system. "Crash Bandicoot" does not have a lot of statistics that it needs to download so all you have to do is hit start and within moments the fun begins. With rich graphics and an adorable character "Crash Bandicoot" will have people who enjoy games like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Donkey Kong" sitting on their couches and playing this game until their thumbs become rigid with arthritis. Young children whll enjoy Crash's antics, especally when the game comes to a stop for a few moments and Crash is forced to wait for the player to continue. Older players will like all of the hidden extra levels and bonuses that they can trip over during game play.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Terrfic Game For The Younger Group, December 14, 1999
By A Customer
Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
The orginal Crash Bandicoot is pretty good. The graphics have a cartoonish feel instead of the 3-D look of Crash Bandicoot: Warped. The first cople of levels are pretty easy but then it just gets hard. There is no advancing in the difficultly, it just does from simpe to alost impossible. The 4th level is probably one of the hardest in the games which confuses me. In my personal opinion, the game should be easy till about the 5th level then increase in difficultly so it doesn't appear obvious that the level you are playing is very hard. The bosses are quite easy to defeat except for N. Brio, who is twice has hard the main enemy, N. Brutus. The game, though, is a lot better than any of the Marios or Banjo-Koozies. The sercet levels give you extra lifes that will definately help you later on in the game. The game in my personal opinio, is a little to childish. The characters are child-like except for the main villian and the attacks are pretty tame. But overall, the game is great for your kids. It has a possiblity of being one of the best adventure series ever and it is definately the best game on the Playstaion consule. Of course, that's only my opinion.
