3.0 out of 5 stars Talk About Hits, September 11, 2005
This review is from: Universal Masters Collection (Audio CD)
It is very hard to imagine the feelings so many don't have toward older acts. It is unfortunate because there are so many acts that have a much better appeal than meets the eye. For Patti LaBelle, she has been only one of those very few who has still kept the feeling alive, and as 2006 approaches, her 45th anniversary in the music industry will come out. While there have been so many great songs and albums she has made, when labels make hits collections for her legendary attitude, they sometimes fall flat on their feet. That has remained unfortunate, because so much isn't there.

Patti LaBelle: Universal Masters Collection, is a import compilation of Patti's longtime musical portraits from her era with MCA Universal in the 80's and 90's. The collection includes some great pop songs but could've been a little more to have the attitude with. You still nevertheless have some of her great songs like the hot New Attitude from Beverly Hills Cop, Stir It Up, If You Ask Me To, and the upbeat and soulful When You Talk About Love, the hip hop trendy Feels Like Another One, and Yo Mister. While it does stride a spell, the compilation does have a few overshadowed mishaps. The collection does overlook some great songs including On My Own with Michael McDonald, If Only You Knew, Somebody Loves You Baby, and a few other great tracks. Not to mention classic standards that Patti made during her days with The Blubelles, and with LaBelle. Especially with songs like Lady Marmalade, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, The Best Is Yet To Come, and Moon Shadow which could've been added on as a second disc.

All in all, Patti LaBelle is still one of a kind, but this Universal Masters Collection isn't as definitive as what could've been. Instead, I honestly sugget you buy the 1996 Patti LaBelle Greatest hits package instead. It is a much more definitive reflection of a diva that is still standing on her own.
