5.0 out of 5 stars Not only works for GH/RB, but for other PS2 controllers as well.
I bought this adapter because I own a pretty big collection of PS2 games, and I already put away my PS2 for extra space. What am I going to use it for? Very niche titles that few of you will care.

First, obvious compatibility that most will care about is the Guitar Hero guitars for GH3 and RB. They work. Not 100%, but work. However don't expect it to work again...

1.0 out of 5 stars BEWARE: WILL NOT WORK AFTER 2.7 UPDATE
This converter worked fine until I've updated my system to 2.7. Now it's nothing more than paper weight. Good thing I didn't update my system while this thing was plugged in! I hear a lot of people bricked their PS3's and had to FORMAT all their saved games...

However don't expect it to work again on future GH titles since Activion is a money hungry-portholic-jackass and probably will change their game codes so this adapter won't work. Who knows?

Second, dual shock 2 also works well for PS2 and PS3 games. No tilting for sixaxis-supported PS3 titles, obviously.

Ok so the first and second part of my review are obvious ones that everyone else already talked about. My main test subjects for this review are
Taiko Drummaster, Beatmania, Pump it up, DDR, Tekken arcade stick, Street Fighter 15th anniversary controller by Nubytech, and Saturn PS2 controller.

Taiko Drummaster-Game only recognizes the drum as the dualshock2 controller. What this means is that you can't use the drum to navigate the menu, but WILL work once the song starts. All I could do was to use the controller, pick a song, pause, and then switch back to drum in order to play the game.

Beatmania-Game has an option to choose either controller or turntable controller. I pick turntable, and the controller works perfectly fine.

Pump it up-It works well

DDR-DOES NOT WORK. If it works, there might be lags. Sorry for the confusion.

Tekken arcade stick-It works, but I read somewhere that there are few millisecond lags for joystick inputs. Doesn't affect average Tekken/VF player like me, but experts might.

SF 15th anniversary edition controller pad by Nubytech-Tested with SF Anniversary Collection, and it works fine.

Saturn PS2 controller-My main reason for buying the converter was to use this controller for my fighting games like KoF and SF on my PS3. It was bit of a gamble since this controller is an import, but to my surprise it WORKS!!!

In conclusion, this converter does a pretty good job of letting you use most of the PS2 controllers for PS2/PS3 games on PS3.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not close enough..., April 4, 2009

As another poster has mentioned, a newer PS2 controller revision H does not appear to work at all. I found an older controller, and that worked, except that R2 didn't work for a driving game, so that is limiting. I also have a Logitech wireless controller, and that seemed to work perfectly! This was all with system version 2.60.

Note that I'm not using it for one of it's biggest features, using the PS2 guitar controllers.

I upgraded the PS3 system software to version 2.70, and now the TAC adapter locks up my PS3 when I plug it in, as a previous reviewer mentioned. (Also, as that previous poster mentioned, do not have this adapter plugged in while updating the system software!) So, it looks like it won't work at all, now. Until updating the system software, it looked like it was going to be good enough, as I'd just use it with the Logitech controller, but this seems like a real problem.

Works perfectly (so far). Star power even works like it is supposed to.
Some of the other reviews said that you had to use the select button, but
this is not true--at least with MY guitar (Gibson). My wife said that she
thinks there may be a small lag, but I cant say that I have noticed it.

If you bought a 80gb PS3 like I did--and have been tearing your hair out
because the console will PLAY your old Guitar Hero games but your guitar
doesnt work--then this is your salvation :)

TAC deserves some kind of award for creating something that Sony should
have built INTO the 80gb PS3 if they were going to claim
'backward compatability' for the Guitar Hero Series; Who wants to play
GUITAR HERO with a controller?

*NOTE: You may need to reassign controller IDs so that you have an empty
slot for 1A (thats where your guitar needs to be located). You will also
need to keep a normal controller handy, as you will need it to exit the
games (PS2 guitars dont have the nifty little PS3 button).

Rock On!

I'm guessing that most people are interested in this item for the same reason I was: to play PS3 Rock Band with a PS2 Guitar Hero controller. To cut to the chase, I plugged it in and it worked perfectly.

As a side note, I've been letting my 2-year-old play with the PS2 GH guitar for a while now, and it still works. Good luck trying that with the Rock Band guitar. :)

I also used it to play Guitar Hero 1 for the PS2 on my PS3 (note that it's a 60GB PS3, which is hardware-compatible with PS2 games). It worked, but it initially recognized the guitar as controller #2, even though I turned on the console by inserting the game disc and didn't activate my PS3 controller. It was seeing the BD/DVD remote as controller #1. I pressed the PS3 button on the remote and changed it to controller #2, and presto, the guitar became controller #1 and worked fine.

There are only two minor issues that kept me from awarding this five stars:

1. The controller number LEDs don't work. (The connection LED does.) I don't care enough to mail it back for a replacement.

2. The included documentation is feeble. I had to check the online FAQ to figure out why GH1 wasn't working at first. The information in the package should have been more clear.

So, to sum up, the doc is poor and the build quality may be questionable, but the product does what it's supposed to and does it very well.

I bought this b/c I didn't want to spend extra money on controllers I already owned. It worked perfectly with my wired and even wireless ps2 controllers for ps3 games. Would def recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great alternative to buying another guitar., May 7, 2008

This product is a great alternative to buying another $50-$60 guitar. I already owned two PS2 guitars and then had a third guitar when I got Rock Band. The last thing I wanted was to buy a forth guitar. This adapter is a great solution. It allows me to use the PS2 guitar with Rock Band. In fact, I like it better than the Rock Band guitar because of the "click" when strumming. My only complaint is it is a little difficult to activate star power, but after a while you learn to deal with it. Also, you do lose the second set of fret buttons, menu navigation buttons, etc. but that isn't any fault of the adapter (obviously).

As for compatibility, I've tested and it works with PS2 versions of GH1 and GH3 on the PS3. However, GH2 for the PS2 does not work when using this adapter on the PS3. So unfortunately, it seems I will still be forced to hang on to the old PS2 (which sucks because the only reason I bought the more expensive version of the PS3 was so I could get rid of the PS2).

Also, in case you miss it in the tiny print in the instruction manual, on some guitars, you can simulate the PS button by pushing both the start and select buttons at the same time, which is useful for turning this off.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does NOT work with PS2 Games on a PS3, August 19, 2008
= Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars

This review is from: Universal PS2 to PS3 Controller Adaptor (Accessory)
This TAC adapter will allow you to use a ps2 guitar controller to play guitar games made for PS3. If you have a 60 or 80 gig PS3 that can play old ps2 games, then beware that this adapter will NOT let you play GH 1, GH 2, and GH 80s on your PS3. TAC states this on the back of the package, but it is not readable in the images on Amazon. If you have a guitar made for ps2 you can buy the GH3 for PS3 game disc and use this adapter to make your guitar controller work. That way you can avoid buying the entire GH3 package that includes the game + USB wireless guitar that is more expensive than just the game disc by itself. It was not designed to be used to play old ps2 games on your PS3 and can not be used in that manner. I give it only 3 stars because it does allow a ps2 guitar to work on my PS3, but the reason I bought it was to play old GH games on the PS3 and it won't work, and was not mentioned in the product description at the time I bought it. I will hang on to it in case it may come in handy if a friend is over and we need to use it for a second guitar, but other than that this thing is useless to me and was a waste of $20.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does not support with PS2 games, May 28, 2008
This review is from: Universal PS2 to PS3 Controller Adaptor (Accessory)
I might be in a unique situation here, because I only have a PS3 and have had difficulty playing GH1 and GH2 on it. The PS3 Guitar Hero controller doesn't work on the PS2 games - you need a PS2 controller. So I bought a PS2 guitar and an adapter, but my current adapter only sort of works.

Having read the advertising about this new PS2 to PS3 adapter being 100% compatible, I had hopes. Unfortunately for me, the tiniest of tiny print on the teeny tiny note tucked away in the packaging reads, "The use of this PS2 to PS3 Controller Adapter for PS2 games on PS3 console is not supported."

Thank you, Amazon return policy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Adapter works great with DualShock 2 Revision A, but not with Revision H., February 7, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Universal PS2 to PS3 Controller Adaptor (Accessory)
I purchased (2) of these TAC/AntCommandos PS2 controller adapters with the hopes of using the less expensive PS2 DualShock 2 controllers for playing PS2 games on my 60GB PS3, rather than spending $54.99 on the more expensive DualShock 3 controllers.

These PS2 adapters worked great (no rumble however) with the Sony brand DualShock 2 controllers SCPH10010 (Revision A) controllers, but the adapters DO NOT APPEAR TO WORK CORRECTLY with the Sony brand DualShock 2 controllers SCPH10010 (Revision H) controllers.

You can find the revision level stamped into the plastic case on the back of the DualShock 2 controller.

I tested these PS2 adapters with (4) separate DualShock 2 Revision A controllers and they all worked fine. After I wore out my first pair of revision A controllers, I purchased (2) brand new DualShock 2 controllers from a local store, and they turned out to be revision H.

The revision H controllers were unresponsive to any input when used with this PS2 adapter. As a further test, I asked a friend to bring over his DualShock 2 Revision A controllers and they worked fine.

I do not own the Guitar Hero accessories, nor any other DualShock 2 controller revisions, so I can't comment on those combinations.
