My passat came with OEM Bi-xenon headlights. When one stopped working and the bulb was not the problem, I started to look for a new ballast. I soon realized that for the exact VW/Audi replacement I would be looking at around $400 for one ballast! After looking around I bought a cheap kit from ebay. Not only were the ballasts much smaller than the original (too small for brackets) but after installation I noticed much dimmer light output along with horrible flickering.

I pulled that kit out and replaced it with 2 of these Maxlux Ballasts. The size of the ballast fit perfectly into the original bracket and my light output is comparable to the OEM ballasts! Also zero flickering! I have had them in the car for a few months without a single problem. I would highly recommend these for people who are replacing factory ballasts or someone who wants to do a conversion.

I connected the ballast to a Kensun "35 watt, 6000K" HID lamp, switched on the power and bright light radiated from the lamp.
It's supposed to do that, so it scores 100/100.
Assuming that it continues to function, it's flawless.
Because I've not fooled with HID lamps before, I performed this test using a lab power supply.
The power used by the ballast was 42 Watts, which seems entirely reasonable for a "35 watt" lamp.
Operating at 15 volts, the ballast current was 2.8 amps.
When first turned on, the ballast draws significantly more power.

What I think I learned:
Providing adequate power to a ballast installed in the vehicle is really important.
If troubleshooting HID problems, the FIRST thing I would suspect is wires which
are too thin, or too long. The best bet would be to connect a separate relay and
wiring for each ballast. If all that isn't sufficient, a power line filter may be needed.

Not even a year in the car and they started flickering and turning off, had the vehicle charge system checked and everything is ok, generating plenty of power, I'm also using the proper fuses for hid. Called for an exchange and was told I have to either cut the wires and send a pic of the destroyed ballast or buy new ones and get a refund after I send back or destroy the old ones. That would be ok if I didn't have to drive at night. Only way I can do that is if the overnight the new ones to me.

I bought this to replace a ballast that went out with a previous HID kit. At first I thought I had received a bad ballast, but Maxlux was quick to respond and to try and reverse the polarity of the plug that powers the ballast. That did the trick and the ballast is working great to power my HID bulb. Maxlux was quick to respond to my questions. Will buy from them again if my other non Maxlux ballast goes out.

I gave this product 4 stars. Why? Upon opening this ballast via the 8 screws found on the top and bottom, I found that this ballast was partially sealed from the elements. The black insulation/goo inside of the ballast was not fully covering the whole circuit board. This is not the "highest quality" as claimed in the product description. (-1 star). Why does this matter? Because my other ballast shorted out when water got inside; it was also partially sealed JUST LIKE this one (different brand & assembled in Japan). I will update this review if anything shall happen to this ballast.

Note that this is a replacement ballast, so do remember to keep your old wiring that plugs into the car & out to the ballast. Another comment, one that almost made me make this a 1 star, when I first hooked up this ballast, It didn't turn on. My thought was DOA. But after spending much time and effort checking and switching the cables and double checking the polarity, I finally got it to work by turning the ballast (headlight switch) on/off about 5 times. Once I got through that, this ballast hasn't skipped a cycle yet. My guess would be the ballast's capacitor needs to be charged, but I wish there were instructions that came with this ballast to verify this.

Overall, a great product, considering this comes with a 2 year warranty. Only time will tell!

Bought the ballast as a replacement for one of my Kensun canbus ballasts due to its low price and my previously poor experiences with Kensun . While the product arrived on time and operates as it is described, it is noticeably less bright than my other 35w Kensun ballast. I know that matching color between ballast brands is hard, so I knew this may be an issue, just wanted to let others know as Kensun is a popular choice for HID kits.

My suggestion would be to buy a matching ballast when replacing yours to ensure the same quality and color output.
