I have tried many makes and models of automatic light control sockets that use a light sensor to determine when to allow current to flow into the bulb. Some of the sensors work erratically, some have a short lifespan, some are bulky. This one's advantage is that is has 3 light sensors arranged around the circumference, with a sliding panel that can be closed over each sensor, to make the controller more or less sensitive to light. This is also helpful when you have a light fixture that faces walls on one or more sides, and when you screw in the controller, sometimes the light sensor faces the wall. This unit remedies that by giving you the choice of 3 different sensor locations. The only downsides are that like some others, the amount of current allowed into the bulb is proportional to the ambient light level, so that the light slowly fades on as evening progresses to night, rather than 100% on or 100% off. And even in total darkness, the controller dims the bulb slightly compared to not using the controller. This can be fixed by getting a brighter bulb than would normally be used. Like I said, an imperfect product, but so far is the best I've tried, and has a nice price as well.
