Universal Action, January 16, 2010
This review is from: Universal Soldier 2/ Universal Soldier 3 (Double Feature) (DVD)
Matt Battaglia has gone into producing. What a shame for this "could 've been" action superstar. In this age of comic book hero-to-major motion picture blockbuster, he would have made a great DC Comic hero Hawkman. He is one of those actors who should have had a better career. For the bang for the buck, I liked these two much better than the Jean-clause Van damn original. This story-line was better. Battaglia is a much more likable protagonist than the Belgian karate king. The action is consistent throughout this entire franchise. Never a boring moment. Battaglia's innocent, yet strong face portrayed the nieve, dumb robot to perfection. The humorous moment was his attempting to sing in the RV. Hope he sticks to acting and producing.
Nowadays actors can play an assortment of rolls and it not hurt their careers. Denzel Washington can play Malcolm X one year and the dirtiest of officers in the movie Training Day the next and a made for television movie after that. This was not always the case. Particularly in the late 70s and early 80s when Burt Reynolds was king of Hollywood. His evil Deputy C.I.A character, in U.S. 2 & 3 makes me wonder what if he had taken on such rolls in his younger days. That might have made this picture more successful, unlike today when he is relegated to such rolls in the shadows of the Washingtons, Cruises, Roberts, Bullocks and Damons. He was great as the antagonist.
Nothing in this movie was overdone. If anything I would have liked to have seen more romance between Battaglia's character and the heroine of the movies. This always makes for a better picture when the heroine in jeopardy is also the love interest of the hero ala Louis Lane. This franchise could've branched into a decent television series. Sorry it did not, but as for movies, these were pretty good and worth viewin again. Would not have felt cheated to have bought them separately, but this is more than a baragin, 2 for 1. I give them both a 3.5

Part 2 of Universal Soldier 3 Unfinished Business 7.5/10 part 1 is on Universal Soldier 3 region 2 DVD reviews, August 25, 2009

Back to my review. So Luc wants to get CIA director Resco & uncover the UNI SOL project. The ending has a almost Illuminati syle to it. I liked these movies I thought that Chandra West was better than Alley Walker no joke. Jeff Wincott wasn't to bad Gary Buesy was great I thought that Burt Reynolds needed more screen time but he was good none the less Matt Battagila's acting was wooden but it was better in part 3. I don't know why they reshot the Deverux Scott fight from Universal Soldier 1 for the begging of Universal Soldier BIA. The action was lacking in part 2 part 3 had a bit more the official sequel with Van Damme had a ton of action but I prefer these unofficial sequels over the official sequel.
