4.0 out of 5 stars The movie that made Van Damme a big star 8/10, November 10, 2010
This review is from: Universal Soldier (Laser Disc)
Since I'm reviewing Jean Claude Van Damme movies I might as well throw in Universal Soldier released in 1992 directed by Rolland Emerich starring Jean Claude Van Damme as Luc Deverux Dolph Lundgren as Sargent Andrew Scott & Alley Walker as Veronica Roberts. Story is Luc Deverux is on his final tour of duty in Vietnam & his commanding officer Andrew Scott is not right in the head Deverux just wants to go home Scott thinks that he's a traitor & it has 1 of the coolest openings ever with your 2 main characters killing 1 another at the same time. Then we get zip Jean Claude Van Damme zip Dolph Lundgren bam Universal Soldier. Luc Deverux & SGT Scott's memories have been cleared they are in this program called Universal Soldier it's 25 years later there's a hostage situation at The Hoover Dam we get a cool scene JCVD & Dolph take care of business but Deverux sees things that remind him of his past. A reporter named Veronica Roberts who was fired she wants to find out what The UNIi SOL program is so maybe she'll get her job back she was spotted by a camera her friend is killed by Andrew Scott. Luc takes Veronica & he learns about who he was & slowly regains his humanity he just wants to go home Andrew Scott does too only he still thinks he's in Nam. I love the restaurant scene Dolph's great with the dark humor. It has a great build up with Van Damme & Lundgren's 8 minute fight it's rememberable you know it's them punch for punch kick for kick. I'm glad they didn't use the alternate ending. I know I didn't explain everything but I reviewed this in 09. The sequels I reviewed in 09 as well there hit or miss. There were the TV sequels that had an entirely different cast they are my favorite sequels. it goes more into The Government & The UNI SOL program. Universal Soldier The Return is a guilty plesure Van Damme came back Bill Goldberg & Michael Jai White play the villains Heidi Sanchez I kind of like now. Goldberg is still a mediocre actor but he's still better than The Pitbull in Regeneration. Michael Jai White was a decent villain he does more than the terrorists in Regeneration. I didn't like that Veronica Roberts was dead or that Luc Deverux is working for The Government. I can have fun with it but it's not a good sequel. Then there's Universal Soldier Regeneration along with Derailed this is the worst Van Damme movie I'm sorry I just hate it. I was excited for USR but Van Damme acts like a retard he has 10 minutes screen time Luc Deverux is depressed it never explains why or why he has amnesia. Dolph Lundgren has 5 minutes screen time at best though he was busy doing better movies than USR MMA fighter Andrei The Pitbull Arvlosky is terrible this guy makes Bill Goldberg look like an accomplished actor all it is for an hour & 15 or 20 minutes is punch punch punch punch punch punch Dolph acts like he has Alzhimers. I don't give a d**n about Mike Pyle from the UFC. When Van Damme & Dolph Lundgren are on screen there's no call backs no mention of the 1st movie cause this ignores The Return they don't explain what happened to Veronica Roberts. If you ignore The Return why did they not mention Veronica Roberts & if it's a sequel to The Return what happended to his daughter. It looks like it has a $500 budget. John Hymes your father took small budget movies & made them look big budget why can't you even if you're making a direct to DVD movie don't make a look cheap. The fight I don't understand why people think it's better than the 1st movies fight there just going through walls you can tell it's stand ins. What is so great about that. The villains are boring & The actilon scene at the beginning is good & Van Damme's assault on the terrorist compound were good but that's it I don't care about the characters people being punched to death for 70 80 minutes out of 97 minutes paper thin plot no character development so 2 action scenes don't save this. The fact he choose to do USR over The Expendables makes me hate this movie more. Be sure to read my full reviews of Universal Soldier & it's sequels I did them last summer & USR earlier this year. So Hard Target is next.
