If you use a GPS and have looked at the traditional latitude and longitude numbers and said to yourself "how will I ever find this on a map"...especially after seeing a map...this book is for you.

While UTM is based on the metric system, it's stupid simple to use once you understand it. And John makes it easy to understand...easy enough that you don't even need the "grid square" tool to estimate where a GPS location is on a map.

This is not, however, a map-and-compass book. You won't get any instruction on how to shoot a bearing, determine/calculate declination, etc. But how to use a GPS to plot a position on a map, it's excellent.

If you are not reading and plotting points within 15 minutes of getting this book, please don't ever go into the woods depending on your UTM skills. This book breaks it down to the no-brainer level.

This was an easy read. The book is concise, but that doesn't mean it skimps on details or explanations. The author gets to the point with good information and without being cute or condescending. The provided UTM grid is a nice bonus. Recommended.

Protractor was for one resolution map and so small I could hardly read it (I've got tired eyes but the ones from work are good)

its small to carry, exactly what i was looking for, didn't need the book but the end pages has a few cool reference charts that came in handy

I've been a volunteer with a SAR group for 4 years now--33 years in EMS. This is a well-written, concise book on UTMs. What more is there to say? Packed with information--it's a great technical source if you want to understand all you need to know about the subject. Definately needed if you do any type of SAR work--or even hiking, etc.

Are you interested in learning about UTM? Well, this is the guide for you! The author explains everything in a very clear & concise format. There is even a basic plastic 1:24K scale map tool included with the booklet (with plenty of other choices available through the author's website). Highly recommended!

Needed a "textbook" for orienteering and adventure racing, as I was a first timer. This book, though written for GPS, was exactly what I needed to learn the basics. Have recommended to others.
