Originally published in 1979, the "Universal Fly Tying Guide" by fly fishing expert Dick Stewart is aptly considered an essential reference for novice anglers wanting to improve their fly fishing performance. Now reprinted for a new generation of fly fishing anglers, the "Universal Fly Tying Guide" once again showcases more than 150 choice, make-them-yourself, fly patterns presented with full color illustration and step-by-step instruction. Very highly recommended for the novice fly fisherman, the "Universal Fly Tying Guide" continues to have much to offer even the more experienced fly fisherman and is a welcome addition to both personal and community library specialized reference collections on fishing.

I bought this as a companion to Stewart and Allen's Flies for Bass and Panfish. Both are basically fly pattern books. The Universal FTG devotes 12 of 56 pages to step-by-step fly tying instructions for a select group of representative flies, supported by detailed close-up color photos. There are 8 pages of materials description, including a short, concise glossary. And the remainder of the 56 pages is comprised of individual patterns with associated close-up pictures, useful as a reference for what a specific fly's appearance should be. The pattern information provides guidance, selection of materials and an occasional but important tip or comment towards their construction. The color photos throughout are useful in specific item and material identification. I would likely buy this book again.

I bought this book for my adult daughter who is just starting to tie flies. This was the first book I purchased when I started tying in the '70s. I wanted her to have one as it is very good for beginners. Mine is in pieces but still gets used. Condition was new, delivery was fast, very satisfied with transaction.
