The third in the new series of Universe anthologies upholds the standards set by the first two. It is an excellent survey of the farther shores of literary sf. The only contributors most readers will have heard of are Joe Haldeman, Barry Malzberg, and Brian W. Aldiss, and, indeed, the two best stories--Alex Jeffers' "Composition with Barbarian and Animal" and Paul Di Filippo's "McGregor"--are by authors whose imaginations seem to outstrip considerably their public profiles. There are no really bad stories in the volume, and at least two-thirds of the 15 are memorable as well as readable. Roland Green
