I first read this book when I was about 12. I cannot say that it was the first Science Fiction book I'd ever read. I can say that it helped propel me onto a life-long interest. Universe Between (which was entitled The Thresholders when I first came across it is a good example of early SciFi. Not having too many deep seated concepts it was a pretty good adventure tale on parallel universes and (strangely enough) how it's bad to abuse resources. Not rocket science, a good all around read.

A timeless tale of topology,
By This was one of my favorites when I was in high school, forty years ago. It is timeless in its concepts and characters and would be just as interesting today.

Wow, I just had to add my post here. This was also the very first Science Fiction book I ever read. I moved on to Clarke, Tolkien, Asimov etc. from here, but I will always credit this book for beginning my life long love of the genre.
