Jean Paul Valley or Azrael took over for Bruce Wayne while he recovered from a broken back (minor injury in comic books). Unfortunately he was a bit unstable, became violent and created a 90's style robotic Bat armor. Eventually the real Bat took him down. Wave 16 of DC Universe Classics is Gotham centric so here Az-Bat.

I've found that often the lesser tier characters with crazy costumes make for the most visually interesting action figures. Maybe it's because you can only look at the good costumes so many times. From the waist down Az is fairly standard although he does have spiky wings on the outside of each calf. From the waist up he's all Bat armor. The work on the arms stands out to me the most with lots of detail in the armor and gauntlets. His hands are robotic claws and there are weapons dispensers with feeder belts - they shot razor sharp Bat disks if I remember correctly. There is a stylized Bat symbol on a triangular flap and a robotic looking helmet. The stand out feature, visually speaking, is the "cape" which consists of 6 long strips that shoot up from the shoulders and then hang down to about the calves. They are jagged shaped and thick so you can spread them out a bit and they'll retain it for a little while.

His color scheme is grey, gold, blue, black and silver with red eyes and sensor on the helmet. The work appears very clean even on small bits like the silver claws and red eyes. His Bat symbol is a nice glossy black. I really have no paint issues on this.

There is a cut neck joint but the high collar restricts movement somewhat although it turns a little farther than I thought it would. He has ball and pin shoulders (restricted a little by the armor) pin elbows and cut wrists. The ab crunch and waist joint are present along with universal hip joints, double pin knees, cut thighs and pin ankles.

He has no additional accessories other than his piece of collect and connect figure Bane.

He visually pops in color and sculpt and is well articulated. However, the price point on these is pretty significant now so with no accessories or other goodies it's a tough sell. However a hard Bat fan will probably enjoy showing this guy off. He's a strong 4 stars.

Bane is the tactical genius and venom user who broke Batman's back. As simplistic as his design is they somehow managed to make this a great figure. The sculpt is amazing with little details like the eyelets, stitching and bottoms on his boots, and like the zipper on his mask all hiding in there. His massive chest and arms look great as does the skin tone used. And speaking of the paint it's simple yet effective as well. The boots are a cool high gloss the, gloves more detailed than I thought they'd be and the mask looks perfect. Even his venom dispenser and tubing looks great. He's also as articulated as the smaller figures although some of the joints may differ. Bane is not as hulking as some recent C and C's but still huge - about 8 inches - in comparison to the regular figures. He's a surprising 5 star figure.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Late, Great AzBats, January 21, 2011

I don't know why but I've always been obsessed with the Batman Knightfall plot line from the early 90s. Overall I just thought the new Batman looked really cool. I mean come on, he can shoot flames! Way better than boring gray tights.

Anyway, this is the third Azrael Batman figure I own and by far it's the best of the lot. It looks much more like the genuine article in the comics than the other ones. It's even got the ammo belts for his guns.

The only problem is that if you take him out of the box he's very awkward to try standing. He's way too top-heavy with the cape and his legs are kind of thin compared to the torso. A stand would have been nice, but it's not included. Instead you get Bane's right leg, which is useless unless you plan to buy the other five figures in the set. (Which I don't.)

If you can find a way for him to stand he is pretty cool to look and relive fond memories.

That is all.

This is a must for all of us who grew up in the nineties, and it's a great collector's item..
The presentation is great, a little shorter than I expected, but pretty close to what you see in the pictures.
I won't take it out of the box, but I must say it has some minor paint issues aroun the armor's cape..
that aside, it's just a great toy to refreshen those fond memories of the time that the Bat was broken..

My daughter saved up her Christmas money to purchase this Batman and I have to say it kept her busy forever! She's 10 and loves all superheros and villans and this guy was her top pick and perfect for the price. He is detailed nicely, pretty sturdy, and great for imaginative play. He fits in perfect with our collection!

If you're a child of the 90's, like me and are or have been a DC comics/Batman fan this figure is for you.
This is one of the better figures of DCUC wave 16 and has been a figure I've been looking forward to for some time now.
During the Knightfall story arc of Batman comics where Bats was put up against Bane resulting in his back being injured, the Bats we know and love was put out of commission. This left Azreal, a vengeful vigilante/assassin reject of the order of St Dumas to take his place.
This figure does a great job representing the character's overall look faithfully.
Pros:
1.The sculpt is awesome as expected from the 4 Horsemen(sculptors of DCUC and MOTUC).
2.The figure is very durable. The chest armor is made from a very rubbery plastic allowing for the appropriate give when posing.
3.A fun figure for grown up Kids as well as a cool looking figure for the younger kids.
Cons:
1.THe large "wings" are not made of a pliable material, so when posing or "playing" with, you must be careful.
2.Articulation. The articulation is in some parts, more than what we're used to with DCUC as we have double hinged knees allowing for better crouching/kneeling poses and peg-swivel hands allowing for more range of motion on his hands. The problem lies in his elbow joint area. The armor on his bicept restricts a bit of the movement of his elbow joint.
Also the "Wings" tend to get in the way at times.

Besides that, you have a slick well sculpted figure that should stand up to anything you or your child throw at it!

I can't put this figure into words. I just love this figure. This may be one of my all time favorite figures. I hope that mattel will follow this figure up with another breath-taking Az-Bat but from the earlier stages of Knightfall. The coloring on this figure is great and the spikes throughout his body are much more durable and non-breakable as i expected. The DC Universe Classics have done it again and has given us as collectors another great figure.

This is an exceptional figure. A few things do work against it from being a great figure. Some of the good things include an incredible presentation in terms of scuplt and overall paint application, fairly tight joints, good poseability, and a great depiction of a fan favorite character.
All these things are fine, though some things that work against it are the inherent flaw in the design as evidenced by the very top heavy shoulder and cape area, limited deltoid movement, and problematic neck movement. The new double jointed knees allow for some great posability options, but due to the top-heaviness, getting him to stay in many poses is problematic. Surprisingly though I was able to get him to stay in a straight postured pose so kudos there! Lurching attack/bent knee/battle ready poses work great as they off set the weight in the back, too!
This character seems to endure with fans probably because it was the first time the Batman model really deviated from the traditional look as well as the time honored philosophy of Bruce Wayne's crime fighting methods. Azrael as Batman was a more ruthless and hard edged crime fighter that was not even afraid to take lives - a type of Batman meets Punisher so to speak. His year long tenure as the Caped Crusader during the Knightfall/Knightquest story line in the comics has hardly been forgotten and now the Four Horsemen design team have finally given us their excellent depicion of this character.
I personally have been waiting a very long time to own a version of this character but have never been able to attain the few figures that do exsist of him. This year was finally my chance. Time of course has not been kind to this design as looking at it now it truly shows its 90's timestamp with its gaudy and impractical feel. But much of this can be forgiven as we know we are dealing with comic book characters who are usually victims of their own huberis of fashion sense.
This figure is excellent but probably only if you were a fan of this era of Batman stories and this character in particular. He of course doesn't stand in as a replacement for the real Batman but he is a fun version.

I'm a huge collector of all the dc universe figures. I was let down 'in' the previous series build quality. I was hesitant on how this wave would be. I loved the whole "Knightfall" storyline as a kid. So when I saw they where going to make the Azreal batman I was stoked- but hesitant due to the last series. Lucky for me' this figure exceeded all my expectations. I own all of the knightfall series and I swear this figure was ripped right off the pages!!! Excelent detail! I own close to a hundred Dc figures and this is my personal fav. Buy this period.
