5.0 out of 5 stars Mysteries of the Universe!
Professor Hammond guides us on a personal tour of the unsolved mysteries of physics at the forefront of current research. His sense of humor and writing style make this book an exciting read. He discusses unsolved mysteries from the Higgs particle all the way to dark energy. I really enjoyed this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars for younger readers?
This is a very elementary discussion of current issues in physics and cosmology, with no mathematical content and not much physics. The writing style is very casual, colloquial, and wordy (you might say rambling), and might seem rather silly to an adult reader, especially one with some knowledge of physics. This book might be a good read for a middle school student who...

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting and informative book-great read!, May 27, 2008
This review is from: The Unknown Universe: The Origin of the Universe, Quantum Gravity, Wormholes, and Other Things Science Still Can't Explain (Hardcover)
The Unknown Universe helped me to understand many questions I had about the origin of the universe. I really liked how it was written, using interesting questions for the reader to answer at the beginning of the chapters. Also, the style of writing was fun to read, not like many science books which are (to this reader) usually very technical and difficult to understand. Professor Hammond helped to make the topics that he wrote about understandable in a fun and interesting way that anyone could understand. I had trouble putting it down once I got started!

5.0 out of 5 stars recommended for community library metaphysical studies collections, July 10, 2008
This review is from: The Unknown Universe: The Origin of the Universe, Quantum Gravity, Wormholes, and Other Things Science Still Can't Explain (Hardcover)
What in the Universe is going on with our universe? "The Unknown Universe: The Origin of the Universe, Quantum Gravity, Wormholes, and Other Things Science Still Can't Explain" looks at these baffling questions that humanity doesn't have the answer to and potentially never will. With a focus on the enigma of dark matter, and a sudden challenge to the almost-accepted-as-fact theory of gravity, "The Unknown Universe" is a thought provoking look at little pieces of information that completely turn everything humanity knows upside down. Highly recommended for community library metaphysical studies collections.

This review is from: The Unknown Universe: The Origin of the Universe, Quantum Gravity, Wormholes, and Other Things Science Still Can't Explain (Hardcover)
This is a good survey of the current state of the science of physics presented in an engaging and enjoyable style. Dr. Hammond should be commended for navigating the potentially confusing and sometimes tortuous debate that simmers below the surface of modern physics. He pastes the scrap-book elements of theory and interpretation into a surprisingly accessible and almost seamless whole.

Worth more than five stars.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too folksy., May 29, 2009
In his attempt at humor, he falls short. He trys to be too folksy and after a while he becomes abnoxious. he seems to get off track and at times it's hard to remember what point he is trying to reach.

1.0 out of 5 stars Painful to read, December 25, 2008
This review is from: The Unknown Universe: The Origin of the Universe, Quantum Gravity, Wormholes, and Other Things Science Still Can't Explain (Hardcover)
He was rambling on way too much, he is all over the place and takes too long to get to the point if at all. You could summarize everything he talked about in this book inside a couple of pages. I understand what he was trying to do with each chapter but he ended up wasting my time. This book is not really about the unknown universe it is more of a history of physics a very boring and painful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Noble approach to science's mysteries, June 5, 2008
This review is from: The Unknown Universe: The Origin of the Universe, Quantum Gravity, Wormholes, and Other Things Science Still Can't Explain (Hardcover)
The first thing you will notice about this book is that it explores the true mysteries of the universe in a completely different way. The author uses a vast arsenal of unique approaches, including humor, short quizzes and real world situations to explain the mysteries and theories of our universe. It was a bit difficult to muster through at times, given an overall lack of experience in the physics subject matter, but still a good read!
