The search for the perfect song,
By
This review is from: Universe & Villa (Audio CD)
Refer to Aztec Camera and Prefab Sprout. Add a bit of Scritti Politi, the name of the album is reminiscent of their titles, such as Cupid & Psyche 85. Even though the whole album is very well produced for me it starts to soar with the The Sound Of Your Name. You can almost taste the joy of Stephen Becker's search for the perfect song. The next song It's The Minor Chords That Kill You continues as a great rock song, ending the album on an ironic note with the song I Hate Rock And Roll, another great rock song. I also like the minimalist sound of Taxi in the Snow. I can really relate to the hopeless romantic vein of I Will Go To My Grave Wanting You To Love Me. Cue another reference Prayer Boat and their only album Polichinelle. Just like that one you can start Universe and Villa with the repeat button on.
I only just bought the record in December when I had already made up my top five, otherwise it would have been placed higher. The album is a record of the search for the perfect pop song. A journey that I am glad to go along on.
