This review is from: The University Against Itself: The NYU Strike and the Future of the Academic Workplace (Paperback)
I found this book fascinating, primarily because of the sheer scope of the essays it contains. NYU's recent seven-month strike by graduate students is described in relation to undergraduates, faculty, university administrators, academic governance structures, local businesses, minorities, the media, and the trade union movement. It is studied as a historical phenomenon, a case study in activism, and a debate over first principles. Is academic teaching a job, or a vocation, and should these be rewarded differently? Is good educational management analogous to good corporate management? What kind of university are we building for the twenty-first century, and do we have any choice in the matter? For those interested in the future of higher education, this collection offers a richly detailed, worthwhile and thought-provoking read.
