5.0 out of 5 stars no really, it's that good!
this game is like chinese checkers and chess and othello all got married. you know how chess is all about politics, and "diplomacy" is all about, er, diplomacy? this game is all about troop movements. it should be required for west point cadets. a great thinking man's game.

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars Great game, but a little overpriced.
I guess if people buy this for $25, then you can argue it's worth $25 but when we received the game I was surprised at the fact that is feels a little cheap. More like a $15 game.

(I can't help but think they'd sell a ton more of these if they were cost less... but then again we don't buy tons of games so maybe it's just me.)

BUT it is lots of...

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll be hooked!, June 3, 2003

Moving the black and white balls around seems like it could be mundane but be careful......there's strategy involved. Our family has spent endless hours battling each other for board dominance. It's not as simple as it looks. Once you learn a few strategic moves, you'll be hooked. If you enjoy games that involve a little thinking, this isn't a bad one to add to your collection. My children challenge the adults just as much as the adult battle each other. One of a few games that isn't too difficult for all age groups to learn and master.

I love Abalone. I like to think of it as sumo wrestling with marbles. The idea is to push your opponents marbles off of the playing field using your marbles. The rules are fairly easy and the game can take many turns.

My husband and I lost one of our marbles and were totally bummed when we went to play it and saw that it was incomplete. It has been replaced and we're back in the game. Abalone is hard to come by and my seem pricey but totally worth having if you enjoy strategy games. My nieces and nephews even enjoy trying to beat us when they come by. :)

Bought this as a gift for an 11-year old birthday gift - for a brillant kid who loves these kinds of games. No complaints. Service was as promised and package arrived just in time.

I'd recommend looking for a generic version of this.

Although this board game is based on simple rules and all pieces are treated equally (i.e. they all move in the same way), it does resemble chess and go somehow strategically. Maybe it is more than just the colours (the game has a black and a white set of pieces) and the capturing of pieces (by pushing them off the board). It challenges the player into risking a few own pieces to capture your adversary's.

Not like in chess or go, movements early in the game can be undone by reversing the pieces back to the last position.

Abalone is easy to learn, and mastering it is rather quick. Then it's just lots of fun to play, games are fast and losing helps develop new strategies.

It is recommendable for kids who still find chess too slow or intellectually too demanding. The fact that all pieces are the same and move equally helps them playing and enjoying the games from the very beginning.

My son and I are serious board game fanatics, so we are always on the lookout for quick-playing, but intensely strategic games. Abalone fits the bill quite well and was a big hit this Christmas. The game stores very neatly in its box, the pieces are solid and the board is well-made. Gameplay is fast and east to learn, yet interesting enough to keep you playing over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best game ever, November 5, 2009
= Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars
This game is a mixture of sumo wrestling and chess. There are no dice or any other chance factor, only your brain against the opponent's. Simply the best board game ever, really fast to learn (only a couple of rules) and an organic and dynamic flow. It's too bad there are no popular tournaments, because I would gladly sign in!

A treasure for the brain.
